It is pouring down rain and the streets are bacly flooded where I live. The buses are not running so I will have to walk to work this afternoon. It is only a few blocks and I have an umbrella but I will get splashed many times as I have to walk on the side of a busy flooded street. I cannot afford to stay home and besides there is no one to cover my shift. It is just water and I will survive and dry off eventually as I have to walk home in it too. The store I work at is very picky about what we look like and I will be going in soak and wet with wet shoes and stockings. I dread the stares I will get and want to know how to handle their smart remarks and if my supervisor who is always looking to criticise everything I do says something. What can I say that will get the point across to them that they are being rude and insensitive without getting myself fired or written up. I know I won't look to good to the customers but hey they don't have to walk in the flood.

I don't have any flip flops or anything to walk in except my regular shoes and we are required to come in dressed to work.

There are no stores next door to change clothes in. There are some fancy restaraunts and that's about all. I don't have any boots that I care to ruin in the water.

We have a big notice about the dress code posted in the break room and you have to come in the store dressed in uniform and even great and help customers when you are on your way out or in (another words when you are off the clock)

ok, I guess you already know that it is not legal for them to require you to work off the clock. And by requiring you to help customers when you aren't working is just that.

I'll assume you really love your job and that is why you are putting up with their garbage. For TODAY what I would suggest you do is a) walk as close to the buildings and away from the water as you can b) make sure to use that umbrella and a raincoat if you have one c) bring a towel and hair dryer to work if possible.

Maybe a friend can take you to work or you can get a cab?

For the future, since you know the roads flood, get a pair of rainboots and a full rainsuit. You can get good deals on them at Overstock and here you can get a full rainsuit here for only $11 http://www.ppprainwear.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/details/ProdID/30/category/12/secondary/16

Good luck today!

Under the circumstances, they should give you some leeway on changing clothes once you get to work. Just talk to your supervisor and explain the situation. Another option is to buy some of those rain boots and put your shoes on when you get there or find out if there's someone you can catch a ride with until the weather lets up.

Wow...I dont know what to say to this..I my self I would carry my work clothes in a trashbag and put it in a back pac that way they will stay dry. And I would change at work. As for the people I would tell them exactly how it is, and tell them that you dont appreciate how they are treating you, thats if you cant ignore them, which can be very hard at times. I would also tell your boss that you dont appreciate how they are treating you and that you will look else where for a job if need be.
I am sorry if this isnt any help at all.

Hey you must live in Houston...Flooding everywhere right now.
Wear an old pair of shoes...change when you get there....As far as the remarks...Most likely alot of your co-workers got wet as well. Just thank them for pointing that out to you...how wet you got...its raining. Really? I didn't have a clue! Etc. Don't let them see you cringe...don't allow them to spoil your wonderfull day. Good Luck.

Carry your work clothes, shoes, whatever, in a plastic bag, along with a towel. Since you can't change at work, change next door or someplace close. If it comes to it, bag up each leg and walk lightly. And if you manager has something to say, remind him that there's a darned flood outside and to cut you some slack.

Wear old clothes on your way to work and carry your work clothes and a towel in a plastic garbage bag so they don't get wet. Dry off and change in a public restroom as close to work as you can. Cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic bag and put it on over your clothes to walk the rest of the way to work. Take it off and throw it away once you arrive.

If no one is available to give you a ride, and you have no way to wear a different pair of pants to walk in and swap them at work, then I think best might be simply to explain.

"Why are you wearing those dirty pants to work?"

"I'm afraid I had to walk here - the buses aren't running - and the street is flooded. There was no way around it."

Wear crappy clothes to work and change when you get there. Just wrap the clothes you want to wear in a plastic bag before putting them into a duffel bag and they'll stay dry no matter what the weather is like

Wear Jeans and boots for the walk and bring a change of clothes with you! You are not the only one with a critical boss! Have a good day!
