Our dating system was created several hundreds of years after the death of christ. The priest/monk who decided on the system had no way to accurately gauge the time since the birth, so had to estimate.

Its not a descrepency in faith here, just in humanity, someone is born and lets say 345 years 2 day and 21 hours later someone decides to think up a way to keep track of years that wasn't abitrarily based on the life of rulers(4th year of yadayadas reign) leaders who were often named the same thing through the generations casting more doubt onto WHEN.

Its not a matter of importance to the faith to know when it happened, so it wasn't kept. Only the matter that it did happen is of import.

What "glaring discrepancy" are you referring to?

In the 6th century a Roman monk named Dionysius Exiguus created a new calendar based from the birth of Christ (the calendar of his time had measured the number of years passed since the Emperor Diocletian).

Dionysius erred in correlating the Nativity with the 754th year from the founding of Rome...he was off by 4-5 years. Rather than revise the issue yet again, Jesus' birth is correctly placed within the B.C. time frame.

We made up our calendar and timeline. So what, a person named Jesus might have been born in 4 B.C. or 5 A.D.. So were lots of other Joe Blows.

The time "mistake" falls in the difference of the Calendars. Maybe you did not know that the Chinese also have a different calendar than the US.

Supposed to be 6 BC, the census correspond to that time.

When he was born is not important. The important thing to realize is who Jesus is and WHY he was born.

Gregory made a mathematical error, the easiest way to correct it is to back date. Did you go to school?

Controversial, We still don't know exactly when, only time will tell. BC was invented by humans, not God.
