You get what you pay for. Inexpensive digital cameras take mediocre pictures. It is really good to invest in the best you can afford.

And in my opinion, one feature that increases the enjoyment of using a digital camera is the size of the LCD screen. It is hard to see what you are taking a picture of if you have a tiny 2 inch LCD or smaller. Try to get something at least 2.5 inches, all the way up to 3 inches.

And I recommend the Canon Powershot S80. That is a very highly rated camera.

I've got a Fuji Finepix A345 that's good value, and fairly idiot proof, seem to have a good price on 'em at Amazon.com / Amazon.co.uk at the moment.... there's also the next one up, the A350.

The Fuji Finepix F10 also looks promising, as it shares components with their top of the range Digital SLR, yet costs pretty much the same as the Pansonic someone mentioned:

PANASONIC Lumix 6-Megapixel Digital Camera DMC-LZ5 silver or black.
MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer / High Sensitivity Mode / 6X Optical Zoom / Color: Silver or Black

Enjoy picture picture-perfection and a stylish design in this compact, powerful Lumix Digital camera. Panasonic digital cameras help solve the problem of blurry images caused by unsteady hands, with advanced MEGA Optical Image stabilizer (OIS) technology. A built-in gyrosensor detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. In a dark setting or when the subject is moving, shooting at a faster shutter speed is required for truly great results. That’s why this digital camera offers a High Sensitivity Mode. When combined with OIS, this remarkable shooting mode allows you to shoot at up to ISO1600. And that means stop-action clarity in nearly any situation.
Widescreen 16:9 Mode for Panoramic Images lets you shoot images in widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio), so that you can achieve bold, panoramic images, and view photos as full screen images on your widescreen TV
Snap Off Consecutive Shots at 3 Frames per Second! You can take up to 5 images in Standard Mode and 3 images in Fine Mode with full resolution. In addition, the Unlimited Consecutive Shooting function lets you continue shooting until the Memory card or built-in memory is full.
6x Optical zoom in a Compact Body: Use the 6x optical zoom (without the extended optical zoom) together with the 4x Digital zoom to enjoy up to 24x zoom power.
Two Convenient Power Sources--Alkaline or Rechargeable Batteries: It can be powered by two AA alkaline or two rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. Two Panasonic Oxyride batteries are included, that allow you to take up to 235 photos. Alkaline batteries let you take about 175 photos and nickel-metal hydride batteries allow up to 390 photos.
Built-In Memory--Shoot Even When You Don't Have an SD Memory Card: The built-in memory holds up to 14MB of image data, which you can later Upload to an SD Memory Card or PC.
