The way it was told to me was that the ancient Greeks and Romans decided on one day each for the sun, the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter, the planets visible to the naked eye. This actually is still reflected in the French names for the days and somewhat it the English names for the days of the week.

Lundi - Monday - Moon (la Lune)
Mardi - Tuesday - Mars
Mercredi - Wednesday - Mercury
Jeudi - Thursday - Jupiter
Vendredi - Friday - Venus
Samedi - Saturday - Saturn
Dimanche - Sunday - Sun

Because it works. As the year divides easily in to 365 days (with only adding 1 day every four years), it works well to divide it into weeks of 7 days. We could divide it by 5, but that would make 73 weeks, which is very hard to divide into 4 seasons (18.25 weeks). It works. It isn't perfect, but it is better than having leap weeks, or random "nothing" days.

thats an arbitrary measure of time (days, if you want).
Our week organization is based on the planets and celestial bodies of the solar system: Monday (comes from moon), Tuesday (from Mars), Wednesday (Mercury),Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (saturn), Sunday (Sun). In english it does not makes to much sense, but ins spanish (for instance) it's easier to see my point: Lunes (Luna, moon), Martes (Marte, Mars), Miercoles (Mercurio, Mercury), Jueves (Jupiter, Jovian planet), Viernes (Venus), Sabado (Saturno) and Domingo (Sol, Sun).
