Some people have died while being tasered and police seem to use tasers with an ever increasing frequency. Are they safer and should htey continue to be used by police as an alternative to deadly force?

What do you mean an alternative to deadly force? Tasers usually fall on the scale below deadly force. If someone is threatening an officers life why would he taz them instead of shoot them? You shoot until the threat is stopped, I guess a taser could do that...

An example of a deadly force situation is if the subject had a knife. If the officer shoots that subject with his firearm he is justified. I can't see anyone grabbing a taser instead of a gun in that instance. Another example would be a small stature officer with a huge drugged up subject that threatens to kill the officer. That officer might taz them instead of shoot them.

Tasers are good for everyone. Police should continue to carry tasers. It is safer for the officer than trying to subdue the individual with their hands. People don't die because of the taser it is because of other, pre existing circumstances.
I would rather be hit with a taser than hit with that metal baton. The taser will stop the person then and there won't be any broken bones. A baton can break a bone.

Just do what the police say and dont try to hurt them and you won't be getting either. DUH!

Seriously, who cares if the guy dies. He shouldn't have been breaking the law. Cleanse the gene pool so to speak.

I think that taser guns should be employed by the police, but not as alternative to deadly force. When a criminal produces a handgun or knife, they intend to use it to do some serious harm. A police officer's duty is to terminate that threat. Terminate it, not try to minimize it, but terminate it. People would like to believe that the police use too much force on a regular basis. Perhaps they wouldn't think that way if they were the ones trying to subdue the criminals. In my opinion, if a person is tasered or shot by the police, then that person left the law enforcement official with no other option. A taser was not designed to be deadly, but then neither were automobiles and they are deadly at a higher rate than tasers.

Too bad Americans can't learn by others' mistakes. They were issued to 18 highly trained police officers in London and they had problems so we issued them to every cop in America and guess what? We had a lot more problems. I think we need cops that are big, strong, and not afraid to get physical if they have to. If we are going to use wimps, they need tasers, clubs, night sticks, guns and big strong guys to back them up.

I don't think that they should be used, what ever happened to mase? if people are dying can the police get charged for it...probably not they were "just doing there job" and that isn't right so no i don't think tasers should be used anymore becasue they are deadlier then any beating i have seen

Yes. Tasers are safe. The only people who should be worried if they are safe are the criminals. If someone is pointing a taser at me then I screwed up and i should be thankful that its not a gun!

I have mixed feelings on any type of weapons officers may carry. I have been listening to the news, and they have just abused their priveledges. I hear all the time that either someone died because of heart, or been critically injured due to that. Atleast the cops around here are like that. The cops around here just abuse their authority anyways. I honestly haven't been tased myself, so I can't say I know how it feels. You dont know who is it is getting tased before you tase them. So how do you know that, that person doesn't have a heart condition. I actually heard that our police officers here in this county are trying to get permission to carry machine guns. Like they need that.

Geez Leifr, thats pretty harsh, sounds like your from another country, so what if I said they should only use them on Germans, Italians, YOU, ETC...

Yes, it is much safer than shooting a 9 mm pistol at them. and in general safer than hitting them with a nightstick.

The issue basicly is that the person has refused to obey the request of the officer and is going to be detained by some method, the officer is not the one that makes it happen, the suspect is the one that causes it to happen.

After being warned it is going to happen, the suspect takes full liablity for the event happening.

And if they save one police officer, you bet theyshould be used.

maybe, the police need to figure out whether the tasers are helping them or hurting them. how many law suits have the police force received from the deaths.

Yes, I truly have a problem with being sympathetic towards someone who is being arrested for breaking the law and trying to harm the officer that is doing his job. I personally could give a crap about the lives of these people who think they are above the law.

Yes. Otherwise they would shoot bullets and kill. If a person is endangering himself and others, he is fortunate if only a taser gun was used on him.
