After looking at some questions posted about clone vs real thing, I think what many are asking is: Given the high cost of a new set of nice Callaway (or whomever) clubs, am I, as a mid to high handicap player, or occasional player, better served by saving the money and using clones? When my game improves to the point of being a low to mid handicapper, or I am able to play at least weekly I would think getting the real thing would be a different story. Some guys are playing with pretty old clubs, even a clone brings them closer to the modern technology. I guess I would consider clones only because of cost and as an improvement in technology knowing that something is better than currently being used. If the budget allowed, I would skip right over the clones.
With the cost of clones fairly low, it might not be a bad experiment. Agree or not?

true. most clones will get you just about what you're looking for minus the outrageous price tags. I LOVE muscle back irons like the Titleist 690 but cannot afford the $1000 tag for them. I use, instead, a Nike clone set in which I put together myself, saving me even more money and they are pretty much similar. The Titleists are true forged blades but my clones are cast so there is a difference there, however, playing my clones still give me the feel and comfortablilty with using muscle back irons while I learn and improve my game. I've had my set for about 3 years and have gotten better to the point where I will now be custom fit for my set in a couple of months or so (still working on the price tag for now). But your logic is right on. no need to drop a grand on a set your not ready to use so get the knock offs for now and work your way up.

Why spend $1000 for a set of clubs that probably won't be correctly fitted for you. Clones are indeed a lot less expensive and will come very close to performing as well as the high dollar clubs. I do suggest you get a club fitting done no matter which set you may decide on. A good golf store can provide fitting at a reasonable cost. Or go online to a component manufacturer and you can get a free fitting that will give you a general idea of what is needed. Made a set for myself at 1/4" shorter and a 1* lie adjustment, works great! Hope this helps.

My feeling, as someone who has done from an 18 to a 12 without any lessons or such, is to have yourself get a midrane prices set of CUSTOM FITTED clubs...

By going to a sotre such as Golfsmith (where I went) and taking the most part of a day to have your swing analyzed and to find out the combination of materials you are best suited for, the people at a store like that can get to you in a week a set of clubs that will not just feel like they are your own, but they WILL be you own.

This is by no means an advertisement for Golfsmith or any custom club fitter, but purely from my experiences.
