I know that it's probably just my surrounding settings (Mid west). When I dress down like average Joe/Lazy Sunday, I'm not that attractive. However, when I dress up I'm automatically typecast gay. Where's the balance?

There is none. lol Unfortunately, here in the Midwest, people have the old fashioned mentality. My husband has been accused of being gay because he always dresses nice. His co workers had to meet me to believe he wasn't. It seems if you don't have jeans and a baseball cap they think something is up with you.

I don't know a lot of people who assume that. Most people where I live dress trendy and fashionable and I don't consider them gay. I think metrosexual is the term many use to describe men who dress nicely and take high pride in their appearance.

On the gay note, many gay men dress impeccably. So maybe this is why. It does seem that gay men care deeply about their appearance as that is very important in the gay community, or so i've heard. With that being said, there are a lot of average Joe gay guys out there, too.

There seems to always be a stigma attached to however someone is dressed. If I wear very causal clothes, people assume I have no money. If I wear a nice dress suit with expensive shoes, they assume I'm a businesswoman. It is actually quite amusing going to a high-end retailer wearing extremely causal clothes. (workout clothes, sweats, old jeans) and pay $2000 for an item. They typically try to give us financing options and "work with our credit" when we are dressed as such.
Often, they don't even pay attention... or tend to snub their nose at you.

I also get freaky looks when I enter a dollar store, discount store, or whatever.. dressed nicely. People believe that you should be shopping at a high-end store if you are dressed that way.

It bothers me when men are judged based on their dress or even colors they wear. My husband won't even look at pastels because he believes he would be judged wrongly.

I honestly believe there will never be a balance when it comes to outward appearance. The easiest way to get the most "normal" treatment is to dress absolutely boring.. not underdressed, not overdressed.. dull colors with nothing that stands out. You are more often seen as just another person.

Bahh.. if people could only take a moment to find out what is truly behind the clothes, hair, and makeup.

Besides, you seem like a very wonderful person. Instead of judging people, you are seeking a way to find balance and caring for everyone.. to me, that shows you to be more than what you wear.

Best wishes.

Unfortunately there is no balance, if you dress to sharp, people automatically assume that you're WAY too in touch with your feminine side and are then assumed to be gay. If you dress like a slob, no woman in her right mind is going to waltz on up to you and propose marriage. Society sucks.. my answer is you can never go wrong with a collared shirt some jeans and nice black dress shoes. Steer away from the slacks unless you're at work... I think the way people see it is no straight man WANTs to wear slacks... but if you're going out like I said, collared shirt and jeans and black shoes (not tennis shoes). (=

Because generally women and gay people care more about their appearance than the average Joe.

Well, especially in larger city areas, the homosexual community usually tries to dress nicely and have better fashion sense. It may also be your environments prejudices that make them think that way.

Just ignore the comments. If you aren't gay, but want to dress nice, do it. When you are dressing nice and getting women, they'll learn.

Sounds like your community is a little closed minded. Small towns can be like that. I love a man who can dress nicely and takes care of himself. It's called a metrosexual by the way and I wouldn't compromise your sense of style for those small-minded simpletons!

you know what? i dont think you should worry about it if people assume your gay when you dress up. i like it when a guy actually worries about his appearence. i mean, as long as your not wearing shimmery, sparkely dress shirts, i wouldnt think you look gay. and as long as you know your not gay, who the **** cares what others think? not EVERYONE who sees you walking down the street is going to have "omg i bet hes gay" running through thier heads.

Be confident with yourself. If you feel more attractive and more confident when dressed up, then the hell with others opinions. Be secure with your own identity and know that regardless of your preference, you feel better about yourself when dressed sharply. Keep on PIMPIN brother!
