I agree with the first poster. That number would be 2. Of course if you have twins on the second one, oh well.
Now the reason: It is the most you can keep track of yourself. I mean watch, spend time with, that kind of thing.
Any more than that and you have the oldest child partially raising the youngest one.
Now, if you want a really good example of this in action, go to a kids birthday party. Particularly at a public place (Chuck E Cheeses will do). You don't have to be a member of the party, just watch the dynamics.
If there are more than two children per adult, the adults are not supervising them all. They can't.
You would be in the same position. Look at what happens when you take three small children into a store. Heck, two is a chore, 3 is impossible.
Same thing happens at home. You start expecting the oldest one to act like an adult really, really early.
Anyway, my 2 cents, and worth every penny of them. Both of them.

It depends on what is comfortable with you. This usually is affected by how many siblings you and your significant other had as you were growing up. Someone with a large family is more willing to have more kids than someone that grew up as an only child.
I have two kids right now. I'm willing to have one more. Yes, you guessed it, I grew up with 2 sisters. My wife grew up with 1 brother and 1 sister.
2 seems to be really comfortable though. We can go anywhere without help. We dont need a bigger car. We dont worry about leaving the kids with my parents or a babysitter. I think if we had 3, we would worry about these things.
With whatever you decide, good luck.

I think that you should have 2. That way you won't have a child who is an only child and may experience some of the difficulties that an only child experiences. Also, when they get older, if something were to ever happen to you and your (future) husband, they would at least have each other. I have 3 brothers, so there is 4 of us all together. That's a few too many for me, but I know people who have many more!

People who say you can only take care of two, only love two, only be responsible with two, etc. are wrong! Two is a very tough number, especially starting out. Three is easier than two! After that, one more really doesn't make it any harder. And you will notice as you have more that you do not run out of love- you have more! Teach them to work hard- kids from big families learn to value their abilities and use them. And think about it; if everyone is having two, our social security system will collapse.
P.S.- For those worried about population, the entire world could occupy Texas and the population density of the state would not equal that of the Bronx! So don't buy that one.
Good luck! Shoot for twelve.

It all depends on you. Some people can handle 8 children, like my mother-in-law. And others only one. What kind of income will you have? How many mouths can you feed? How many people can you put through college. Asking 'how many kids should I have?' is like asking 'what should my favorite ice cream be?'... it's a personal decision that you and your partner should make together. How many children do you want. For me the ideal number would be two or three, and I already have one.
