I agree with Darkshadow. There are a lot of people that say adoption is a solution and then never adopt. Even WITH abortion the number of children needing homes outnumbers those willing to adopt them. My parents ran a foster home when I was growing up and I ended up over the span my childhood living with over 200 foster kids. They never got adopted. That was just ONE foster home. Where were the adoptive parents when they were needed? To say that adoption is the solution is naive. To say it and never adopt a child yourself is hypocritical.

Families not being able to adopt has nothing to do with a lack of supply of children to adopt.

Then there are more than 10 million families that:

10. Have a pedophile.
9. Are not allowed because they are gay
8. Are only saying that to pad some stats
7. Only want a kid from white upper middle class parents
6. Don't want a black or hispanic kid
5. Don't want a kid born with AIDS
4. Don't want a FAS kid
3. Are tied up in red tape from a inept government placement agency
2. Have a criminal record

But the number 1 reason is

1. They realize they can't actually handle the emotional needs of an adopted child after they even a few years older than newborn.

So what you end up with is a bunch of people hoping there are tons of unwanted healthy newborn babies of upper middle class white women. What they want is a FANTASY.

Hmm... I think I see a pattern here:
*Some* people want to adopt
Thousands want to adopt
Millions want to adopt
So...
Do we have billions? Anyone?
The current bid is at 10,000,000.
Do we have at least 10,000,001?

Why not compare that to the number of children without homes? Is it underbid or overbid?

Despite my grumbles, I prefer a balanced point of view. I haven't seen that yet, so I'm thinking I will leave this up to a vote. Adoption IS ONE option, but not anywhere near the totality of an answer and definitely a poor one by itself considering the demographics of adoption today. On the other hand, I would not dismiss it outright, or even foster care because I HAVE seen positive outcomes from foster care, despite all the doom and gloom reporting in the news. If it was so terrible, it would not exist. Still others have made the good point that, as before Roe v. Wade, abortions would continue - just in a more destructive format.

My point in asking is that the abortion issue is an ineffective method of getting at the basic problem of women not wanting a fetus. The root causes are irresponsibility, rape, and ignorance. Will those issues continue to go unaddressed?

Parents might resort to illegal abortions - making something illegal doesn't mean it won't happen. Some people might raise their child or give it up for abortion, others might be more careful not to get pregnant, but many of those who would normally use a legal abortion would instead get an illegal one.

I love that so many people suggested adoption. It's not realistic. These kids will be placed into foster care and more then likely, will not get the chance to be placed with a family. It's a nice little fantasy to believe that all unwanted babies will be given good homes should they be put up for adoption. Honestly, if you're going to be all for outlawing abortion, then adopt a child. If you're going to take away an alternative to raising the child, then do something to help.

And with abortions..it's not all reckless women who are loose and slutty who go to clinics. Accidents happen. Birth control fails sometimes. Rape. Et cetera. Despite what the pro-life media may want you to believe, hardly anyone uses abortions as birth control. I'm sure there might be a few way-ward souls who go that route, but it is too rare.

Also, someone mentioned illegal abortions - that is what was done years before abortion was legalized. Taking it away doesn't mean that it won't happen any more. To the contrary it will continue to happen, it will just be unsafe. If abortion was made illegal more children will be dumped onto the state and illegal abortions will abound. What a nice alternative. Heh.

Chances are they will end up an abused child in either foster care or by the mother forced to give birth to them. Sadly, that is usually what happens to children when people are forced to have a baby they don't want. There is also the chance of it being dumped, killed at birth or that the mother will go to a back alley butcher that may well abort the child but might kill the mother as well. The foster care system is overloaded at this point with children that will never get a home or family. What do you think is going to happen to them? Nothing good, sadly.

those people should be put to death in the first place for getting pregnant and not wanting the baby if you don't want children then don't have f'ng sex since how that is what sex is for "reproduction"
then the baby can be put up for adoption and can be raised by someone who with out adoption could have never had children ....and of course that does not include anyone who got pregnant by rape...that's just a very sad thing but it is still not the baby's fault he should not die because of it

Those unwanted children could be given to the Church as a tithe.

Abortion needs to remain a legal option.

Adoption isn't working...look at how many children are growing up without families today.

It depends. Just because something is illegal, doesn't mean it isn't done. If people really don't want to have the baby, they will find ways to get the abortion. for those that can't afford the black market, they will have them and hopefully give them up for adoption.

They get a miserable life, I even think I am unwanted.
My mother got me whe she was 17, they didnt have a stable relationship with my father after a few years. I should have been aborted, I dont like to live anymore! Life sucks.

they can leave them at the hospital and sign over all rights, some states they ain't even got to do that, they can just leave. They can give them up for adoptions, they can just use protection or stop having sex, or get birth control to avoid bad decisions.

They can be put up for adoption. These people should stop having sex or start using protection. I don't understand why there are so many stupid assholes in the world today.
