Just based on the information you provided this is a very general and broad question. What is your gut feelings telling you? I have had many years experience meeting people on the net and while I can say many are what them seem and are honest however, I can also say that I have come to find out that there are many who are nothing like they say. Take lots of time to get to know this person better and always be willing to ask questions and if need be ask the same question many times but in different ways to see if you get the same answer and always be alert if red flags pop up.

The computer is a place for some people to be fake some times you think that what you are seeing is real but really its just that these people are trying to be someone else I was on Mate 1 for a couple of months and every guy on there seemed to interested in one thing SEX not that I'm not its just that some times its really the communication that I'm interested in I personally just think that the computer isn't the place to find the person of your dreams .. not trying to knack you but theirs a lot of things you need to way out before you make this a commitment if you feel that this will work for you then go for it!!! Ah, dating with the internet. Welcome to the 21st century.
All I can say is "be careful". I've never dated anyone off the net, but I've known quite a few people who have. What I often hear is that things are a LOT different when you meet someone in person, versus talkign through IMs.
Also heard one horror story about meeting up with someone who neglected to mention a physical deformity...

Sometimes people can find true love over the internet. It hardly ever happens though. I just would rush into anything, because so many things could happen. A lot of people portray themselves so much different online then how they really are in person. I wish you the best of luck.

Nobody is ever who you really think they are when you first meet...online or otherwise. Someone once said that when you first meet a person, you're actually meeting their representative. I think the 'net makes it that much easier for a person to pretend to be someone their not.
With that said...even if it's a million to one shot, it's still a shot. Go for it, just keep your eyes open.
