My 7 month old female Shizhu killed one of the four puppies of my daughter's dog 's litter. Also the mother of the 17 day old puppies is the mother of my Shihzu. The mother of the puppies had the litter at my house and while the puppies were left unattended for a few minutes this is when she killed one of the puppies. Both my daughter and I are shocked and saddened by this horrible incident and would just like to know why a little dog would do such a thing.

'tlctreecare' has said it best so for, IMO. Other dogs should never be left alone with puppies. When nature tells them to do something, even if it doesn't make sense to us, they still do it. Your dog is not vicious, and your dog is not "bad". She just did what mother nature told her to do, and it is a very common occurrence. Even the mothers are known to kill puppies at times. Remember... Dogs are not people, and they have their own set of laws that they still live by, no matter how much training we give them.

One of the many hard lessons of dog breeding. Welcome!

This is one of the unpleasant things about dogs, and canines in general. In the wild, only the dominant female has puppies. If another female in the pack has them, the Alpha female often (not always, but frequently) kills them. Since your daughters dog (even if she is the mother of the killer dog) had them at your house, your dog considers herself top dog, viewed the puppies as a threat to her domianance, and did what she did. Your dog is not a bad dog, just a normal one. Next time, let your daughters dogs have the puppies at her own house.

The dog that had puppies and the puppies should be kept away from all other pets until the puppies are much older like 6-8 weeks.
Any other pet will kill the newborn young of another dog or cat that is just nature.
They will only defent their own young and not anothers. Your dog has no clue that she is the grandma of those pups only that thet are not her's and they are in her house.

Another dogs puppies are compitition for your dog. They see it as take em out while they're young because in a year it will be six at the food bowl. She's wrong, but you can't tell her that you won't love her less or you will put out more food. She's thinking of herself and her own someday puppies. Don't hate her for her instincts, it's not that unusual.

:-( This illustrates that ANY dog can kill. Small dogs are still DOGS - they think like dogs, they act like dogs.

"The most obvious manifestation of predatory behavior is the stalking, chasing, and often killing of critters in the dog’s home territory. Dogs will chase, catch, and kill cats and other animals that enter or pass by their yards even if they live harmoniously with cats, ferrets, Guinea pigs, rabbits, or other pets in the household. Some dogs will accept the presence of animals they grow up with but will stalk, chase, grab, and even kill newcomers." (source, below)

Sometimes a mother dog will kill her pups if she sensed that they are not right in some way. Since the dogs are all related, I assume she just sensed that this one pup would not make it & she put it out of it's misery.

well possibly territoral, jealousy, in the wild animals will do that. i havent heard that from a shitzu before but i guess it can happen. we had shitzu pups 2-1/2 months ago. the sister to the mother was really good to the pups.

maybe the 7 month puppy was playing with its sibling, thinking it was a toy.another reason, the older pup was jealous that mom had other puppies. ask your vet.

Maybe the puppy is unhealthy and the mother senses it. its a nature's way for animals?

thats horrible. All i can think of is that maybe that one was sick or in pain and the mother did it to save it from pain.

I never heard of a dog doing that.
