I'd consider the Honda CR-V. The Scion xB is nice, though quirky (so ugly it's almost lovable), but the fact that it doesn't come with side-impact or curtain-side airbags put it out of contention if I were buying a car for my daughter.

In addition to the car you want to buy, I strongly suggest you shop around for car insurance first. Young drivers like you are so excited about their first cars, and they usually forget about all the additional costs that come along with the cars, insurance, gas, and maintanence.
I'd suggest you get a nice used car made by Honda or Toyota. Those two companies make the most reliable cars on the market, and it's usually not that expensive to insure.
Avoid trucks, SUVs, or sporty cars, where insurance costs the most for your age.
To name a few (below), these are all good reliable cars and have enough room for your friends as well.
- Scion xB
- Toyota Corolla
- Toyota Camry
- Honda Civic
- Honda Accord
Hybrids are nice, but very expensive even the used ones. Some research showed that it's not worth the extra money to buy hybrids since it'll take many years to recoop the gas money. Not to mention they cost whole lot more to maintain and repair if the car breaks down.

If you're thinking about a hybrid check out the Prius and the Civic hybrid. Both offer great fuel economy yet they have distinctive styling. The Scion xA and xB are boring and offer very little power. The Escape hybrid is okay but only manages to get 33mpg which is great for an SUV but not for a hybrid. The Explorer is out dated and a complete waste - especially if you want good fuel efficiency.
Hybrid cars are cheap on gas and they make a statement that you're aware of how important the environment is.

If You want good milage, i would seriously stay away from the SUVs. The escape isnt bad i suppose, if u dont mind looking like a soccer mom. Or im not sure but i believe Honda has a hybrid SUV?? Or i suppose you could get a toyota 4runner, they get good milage. But for best economy, go with a smaller car from Honda, Toyota or Nissan. Chevy cobalts arent bad. Stay away from ford mostly. I think a scion would be good. they are pretty fun and sporty, plus get fairly decent gas milage. Hope that helps good luck.

I was always into bigger cars untill the recent gas crisis..
My aunt and uncle and my grandparents just went out and purchased 2 pre owned 2005 Toyota Corolla's..
Ifound out they are being made almost luxury inside and are quite roomy, with very very good gas mileage ( 37-42 miles per gallon )
They are actually very very nice rides!! I was surprised and they have 100, 000 mile warranties!! ( wich is a major plus!!)
These cars are almost brand new, look like they have never been driven and can be purchased for well under 14, 000.00 dollars..
My advice, go check one out.. as soon as I can afford to trade my car in, I will be consdering one myself..

I've got and xB and it's cool. I would look into the new tC if you can afford to pay a little more, it's a cool car for the price.Ditch the Fords, you will simply blend in with all of the soccer moms.

Chevy Cobalt, Ford Focus, Toyota Prius. Stay away from Explorer, they guzzle tons of gas. Your best bet is stay away from SUV's in general, price of gas is only going to get higher!

If you want to go hybrid, I'd go with a more tried and true model, like the one from Honda. If you aren't going hybrid, I think Saturns get good gas mileage.
