The menu had things on it like a Maryland Roll, Dynamite Roll (delicious), Dorsey Roll, Ivy Roll, etc but it didn't describe what they were. For the most part, I loved everything. I hate avocado but I want to try sushi again. Any suggestions?

I would try a Negihama Maki (yellowtail roll) or try some Nigiri style sushi like Maguro or try Gunkan style Tobiko (flying fish roe ) Ignore a lot of the fancy rolls that they make and try some of the normal ones first to see what fish and textures you like. Below is my typical sushi rant... and I hate avocado too..

Many people believe that SUSHI = raw fish, this is WRONG
SASHIMI is raw fish slices served above daikon and lettue most time.

Sushi consists of a vinegared-rice with some sort of topping, either fish, vegetable, or egg. Not all of the fish in sushi is raw either.

Nigiri style is the rice ball with a topping
Maki style is the fish withing a roll of rice/nori/ other ingredients
Gunkan style (battleship style) is and oval shaped piece of nori, with rice and then topped with perhaps tobiko , or uni (sea urchin)
Maguro is tuna which is raw
Sake - salmon also raw , but there is a smoke salmon you can have
Ebi- shrimp (cooked)
Ama-ebi - raw shrimp
Hamachi - yellowtail tuna
toro - fatty tuna
Chutoro - fattier tuna
Ootoro - the fatties tuna and the BEST and the most expensive!!
Saba - Mackerel
Aji - Spanish or Horse Mackerel
Kohada - Japanese Mackerel
Hotatate-Gai - Live Scallop
Krodai - Black Sea Bass
Tai - Red Snapper
Madai - Japanese Snapper

There is much more to enjoy about sushi the taste, the texture, the design, the atmosphere it's not about just eating sushi, it's about the Experience!!!!

Tell him your family is not his but yours. He needs to find his own. He can't buy your parents' heart -- they love you first and foremost. Ignore the jerk and continue to date the man who is right for you. You don't say how long you were dating the guy but it seems he built a relationship with your folks and they are having trouble letting him go. You have a brain and a heart, trust your gut and move on. When he sees you really are serious for the other guy, he will look a fool and give up. Seriously, if you told your parents you two are through (and don't have a history of breaking up and then getting back together drama) then tell them you are uncomfortable having him in the house and would appreciate their support in not having him there. If your parents don't believe you, make plans to move out of your abode if you are over 18.

Not sure where I R G _ H I Q is getting his info, but the sashimi here in NYC is not steamed and I've had sashimi in many cities in the US and it hasn't been steamed there either.

With rolls such as the ones you had, most japanese restaurants come up with their own creations and name them on their own.

Common rolls are California rolls which usually have crab, avocado and some other vegetables, Futomaki which is a very large roll with crab and vegetables...after that basically the variety is huge and different to each restaurant.

It's probably best you don't know what everything was........

Anything w/ "California" in the title will have avocado in it.

Try a Shrimp Tempura roll for something different. Also a Fancy Roll.

You need to ask your waitstaff or the sushi chef for a description. They probably have a menu w/ descriptions on it if you ask.

First sushi is a rice prepared in vinegar, and if you are referring to the fish it is sashimi. Sashimi is raw fish. Most places in the US do not prepair real sashimi since it is seamed first. As far as the name so the dishes you had you have to ask the chief who made them.

If you are order real sushi it is ordered by the name of the fish such as unagi for eel, sake for samon, maguro for tuna, and tako for squid.
