All nurses and doctors need to take note when caring for patients. Even people sometimes not directly dealing with the patients, like pharmacy staff, housekeeping, lab staff, and security.

Hospitals have regular floors, units, or nursing stations for people with certain conditions. For example: OBGYN unit, pediatrics unit, surgery unit, oncology unit. These floors consist of many rooms and in each room there can be 1 to 4 beds or more. Nurses are assigned certain rooms or patients to look after. Every hospital is different though.

They also have ICU units (intensive care units). Some can include:
L&D: labor and delivery (we consider this an ICU at my hospital)
NICU: nursurey intensive care unit
PICU: pediatric intensive care unit
SICU: sugury intensive care unit
CICU: cardiac intensive care unit
MICU: medical intensive care unit
These units can sometimes be a few rooms with one or two beds in each room, or they can be one big open room with up to 15 beds or more, depending on how big the unit is. Again every hospital is different.

My hospital even has a burn center. We are the only burn center in Arizona. It is also considered an ICU unit.

We also have a dentention unit with their own sherriff officers. This unit is only for prison immates. Most of these patients have to be handcuffed to their beds for security reasons. Every now and then a sheriff will be in one of the ICU units because the patient is too sick or ill to be on a regular floor and needs the care of the intensive care. Even if the patient is in a coma or unconcious there always has to be an officer right next to them.
