Because you can feel a person's pulse on that finger, it was believed in the Middle Ages that there was a direct connection between that finger and the "heart". The ring was suppose to "bind" the heart so that the woman wearing it would be faithful to her husband. (At that time the men did not wear wedding rings, Hmmm?!)

The Wedding Ring probably originates with the ancient Egyptians. They used a bracelet as the symbol of marriage (being round, it was endless). This "wedding bracelet" practice was subsequently adopted by other nations/cultures.

The Romans and Greeks are the first known cultures to offer a gold ring to their brides. It symbolized both their love (it was thought that the fourth finger of the left hand contained the "vein of love"...which ran directly to the heart) and a commitment in the marriage contract.

The Jews later adopted the practice into their own marriage rite (400 AD?). Among Christians, the Wedding ring was adopted into the marriage service around the ninth century.

I think it is because the left hand is closer to your heart than the right hand.

However, not all countries/cultures place the wedding ring on their left hand. Certainly in Germany people have their wedding ring on their right hand. Over there it is custom to wear the engagement ring (traditionally NOT a big rock but a gold ring) on the left hand. At the wedding the engagement ring will be re-placed on to the right hand. It is the same ring, though, possibly with a new inscription of name and date...

I think its beacuse in the 16th century, the arch diocese of Salisbury, and the arch bishop there, who i think later became pope Puis IX, used to tell the couples who were getting married before him to place the ring firstly on the thumb of the left hand and say "In the name of the father", then to remove the ring and place it on the index finger and say "The son", remove the ring and place it on the middle finger and say "and the holy spirit" and finally remove it and place it on the fourth finger an say "Amen", and then leaving the ring there. Ands thats how we come to have that as the wedding ring finger

We can slip that ring anywhere we want . . just to be unique. However, it just so happen that it is more logical to place it on the left . . . and it became a TRADITION. .
