I've never quite understood why Jack Johnson said this. Holding his arm up means he wasn't out cold, but I don't see how it would indicate he was fully conscious.

the idea is the same as why trainers shine a light into a football players eyes after he suffers a big hit. If you've truly been 'knocked out' your eyes become unfocused to point of not reacting to bright lights. If you squint or blink at the light then you really haven't truly had your bell rung.

Whether Jack Johnson threw the fight or not is and will always be debateable. He was in trouble with the law for violating the Mann Law which was why he fought overseas for a while. Anyways Jack Johnson claims that him shielding his eyes from the sun proves that he was not knocked out and that he threw the fight

If you are really beat, your arms are shot. When a man is truly exhausted, he'd rather bear the pain of bright lights in his eyes than move the muscles in his arms even an inch to shade his eyes.

Therefore, when a man indulges himself by shading his eyes, it means he has more in those arms that could have been used for boxing...in other words, he is not truly beaten. If he is not truly beaten, yet gives in, that means he threw the fight.

Jack was woefully out of shape for Willard and took him lightly. He was being hammered and well on his way to losing when Willard pounded him to the canvas. He just didn't want to admit defeat. Even if he would have beaten Willard, there was a young lion named Jack Dempsey who would have knocked him out. Jack was great but controversial with his comments.
