She is about a year old and just recently started crying all of the time. She also is always trying to get outside (she is an indoor kitty). We are not sure if she's fixed, though we took her to two different vets and spoke with the humane society about it. They said they couldn't tell, as she has a very small scar but it's not definitive. The only heat symptom she displays is the whinning, but she's been like that since we got her, just not this bad. Could it be that she's just ancy because it's summer time? Please help; it's starting to drive me nuts.

The wanting to go outside is not new, just intensified. The same with the crying. And she does not display the other heat symptoms.

I agree with dusty_puppy, but I am wondering about your vet and why they are unable to tell you if she is spayed or not...they should be able to tell or find out.
If she was an outdoor cat prior to you adopting her it could be boredom and if that is the case she just needs some toys, playtime with you and maybe a DVD to watch (they have catsitter videos to entertain them) when you are not at home. Also let her have access to a window so she can sit and watch the outdoors (it is like TV to them).
I would find a good vet and get her fixed right away if that is the problem. Good luck!

Has she always had this desire to go outside or is the behavior new? If it's new, there is the possiblity she is in heat, and you'd know. They will howl and rub all over you, they will roll around on the floor as thou they are possessed. You would be able to see a definate behavioral difference. Have you had any kitty visitors? Look around the outside of the house and see if you can spot where any male cats may have "marked" your house. It's pretty easy to tell, and should only be about 10 - 12 inches above the ground, and it will be about a 4 inch diameter circle where they have sprayed. If so, I'd say your girl is in heat and is attracting the neighborhood males. There is a way to tell if a female animal has been spayed or not, other than opening her up, and that is with a blood test that the vet can take. It shows hormones that would be produced if she were still intact. Just like a human female. But, it would probably cost you more than having her checked by opening her up, that way, if she isn't spayed, they can go ahead and do the proceedure.

If none of this is new behavior, she may just be wanting to go and roam. You might want to take her out on a lead to see how she reacts to the outside before turning her loose. If you want her to remain an indoor kitty only, I suggest getting some catnip to keep her calm and happy inside. Maybe even a playmate, especially if you are away all day, and she may be spying other kittys outside playing, she may just be lonely.

Hope this helps.

Well I would need to know a little more about her behavior. If she's rubbing up against everything, with her butt up in the air, that's heat!!! If she just scratching at the door a lot, she may just want out.

However, since she is only about a year old, it is unlikely that she was spayed and became stray within a year. The timing would indicate that she is not yet spayed, and you should probably have that done. If you don't, she will escape somehow and come back pregnant, and you can bet money on that.

Then you will have kittens to find homes for and I'm sure your local humane society would appreciate it if you did not let that happen.

She's in heat... She wants to get outside and find a male to breed with her.. You can fix it by getting her spayed as possible.

---Its hard for vets to tell for sure if a cat is spayed.. Even a specialist would have to open her up to check.. Its not like a person.. We would have an obvious scar, but we'd also be able to say "Yea, i've had that done".. An animal is much different.. They don't scar as visibly and the tiny one mentioned could have been a hernia that was fixed at birth.. The only 100% sure fire way to tell if an animal has been fixed is to open her up and look. But judging by the behavior, I'd say no, because a spayed cat does not whine and beg to go outside.. Especially if she's never really been outdoors....

Well if the vets don't know for sure than maybe she is not fixed. The only bad thing is if before you got her she went into heat and then she was taken in to get fixed. She will always do the crying thing even if she's fixed, but most of the time fixing the cat changes that behavior. So I would suggest to make sure that she is or not fixed and take care of the problem.

The odds are what looks like a spay scar is something else. Fix her a kittie porch that fits over a window and lets her sit in the sun BUT remember there is no screenwire that will prevent True Love. If she's not spayed love will find a way. Also consider adopting her a friend, (spayed or neutered) it may take some of the activity away from you.

she is in heat. she is crying to try to attract a male to mate with. and she may smell male cats outside and that is why she wants to get out. make an appointment to have her spayed. the symptoms will not go away until she is fixed or until she mates.

I have a male cat who IS spayed and he cries to be let out all the time too. He'll even try to dash out of an open door. I don't know why cats do this, I think it's just their natural instincts.

sounds like she is not fixed ..that would be my guess... if she's not ..she should be that would solve the problem... why not put her on a leash and take her out....
