I know loads in Scotland:

Glasgow

- One Devonshire Gardens - this is a period hotel in an old townhouse building in the west end of Glasgow very near the botanic gardens. The rooms are huge! It's quite expensive, but well worth it!

- Malmaison - In the city centre in an older building converted into a hotel. Again, this is very nice, and also reasonable - around £130 a night or less. Well decorated and in an excellent location.

- Langs - In the heart of the city. A more modern hotel, well decorated and very reasonable. Close to pretty much everything in the City.

- Moat House - on the banks of the river Clyde right next to the SECC. Very close to the Quay - there's a cinema , bowling alley, and various eatieries. It's around 10-15 years old, but is very nice.

Edinburgh

- The Glasshouse - a very modern hotel with excellent styling. Centrally located just off Princes street and next to the Playhouse and across the road from arguably one of the best Italian restaurants around (Giulianos). It's a little more expensive than most 4* places, but well worth it. If you can, you should upgrade to a suite.

- Malmaison - located at Leith Docks. A little further away from the city centre - maybe around 5-10 mins in the car/taxi. Some very nice views, and in a very cosmpolitan area. Ocean Terminal shopping mall is a 5 minute walk. Rooms are well decorated, and I once got a free upgrade to a suite - very nice! :-)

- The Point - a less expensive option at around £90 a night. The rooms are fairly standard as 4* hotels go, but most rooms offer excellent views of Edinburgh Castle - very impressive at night!

I've stayed in loads of hotels all over Scotland, so if there's somewhere in particular you had in mind please let me know and I'll help out!

Edinburgh is historicaly wonderful, castles and ancient, bars with interesting friendly locals. London is crap but Oxford and the Cotswalds is beautiful. Cornwall and Devon are great to explore in a hire car, get lost in Lands End. If you've heard of it, avoid it, go to where the tourists don't, discover the real England, but check out Dublin too. Tony in Isan NE thailand, heard of it?
