Retired Racing Greyhounds are usually very laid back, low energy dogs. They typically sleep 18-20 hours per day and do well in working homes. Of course this ultimately depends on the dog's individual personality, but your local adoption group will try and match you with a dog who's personality best suits your lifestyle. If you are interested in more information on the breed or for a list of adoption groups across the country go to Greyhound Pets of America's website - http://www.greyhoundpets.org/

I am a college student and I have a dog. He is a cocker spaniel. I work 8 hours a day and he is left home for that time most every day but the weekends. He is happy and healthy. He gets plenty of play time and we got for walks and what not. I see nothing wrong with getting a dog if you are gone for like 8 hours a day. I wouldn't agree with much more then that. I think as long as you get a breed that is a little more laid back there shouldn't be an issue. Cocker's are great dogs but they need to be groomed every 6 weeks or so.

Unless you can afford a good dog walker or doggie daycare, I would say no. Plus, let's say you and the dog can deal with 8 hours locked in a kennel mon-fri, are you planning to stay home or only go to dog friendly places every weekend, too?
You might try an older cat. That way you can have a pet that can deal with your schedule for now. But an older cat won't be a 15-20 year commitment, that way when your kitty reaches the end of its life (maybe 6-10 years depending on the current age), you might be in a more dog friendly situation. Just an idea.....

DON'T GET A DOG IF YOU'RE A STUDENT Dogs need lots of attention and cannot be on their own for more than 4 hours. Can you imagine not going to the bathroom for 8 hours. There is no dog who would or should ever be left alone for that long!

1. Get an older dog from the pound who is already housebroken and able to hold their bladder longer.
2. A puppy needs a lot of attention and bathroom breaks at least every 2-3 hours.
3. You'll have to be prepared to get home asap because 8 hours is a long time. If you could get a dog walker or have someone let the dog out midday that would be better.
4. Or get a small dog and train it to go potty in a doggy litter box.

Don't get a dog unless you are able to care for it. Can you imagine being locked up for 8 hours a day in a hot apartment and nowhere to pee? If you get a dog, get a dog sitter or leave it with a friend. I would have suggested a crate, but I don't believe in them.

How about a gold fish...what the heck is the point of getting a dog if your not going to be there to spend time with him. a dog is a living thing...not an ipod....you cant just buy because you want it, then put it down when you are stick of it. have you even stopped to consider that a dog will live up to 15 yrs. are you willing to be resposible for him that long...or are you going to be one of the many ppl i see on a daily basis bringing in "Fido, or Fluffy", to the pound because you just dont have "time" anymore; when honestly...they never made time to beging with.

Maybe a great dane, they are fairly happy to lay around alot. As long as you commit to giving it lots of attention and play when you get home.
Also our long-haired chihuahua was home alone 8 hours a day and is perfectly well adjusted and happy. She just sleeps most of the day while we're gone.

Dogs are social animals and it's really not fair to leave a dog home alone all day.

It would be VERY selfish to get a dog. If you must get a pet, get a cat or something caged!!! Dogs require too much human interaction for your schedule!!
Please think of the dog first and not of yourself!!!!!!!!!
