Referring to the recent sentencing of two of the homophobic murderers of Joe Dobrowsky in London UK, the details of his murder being so horrific it makes one ask what we are doing as a society to try to prevent this type of brutality.

The conservative evangelical branches of the Christian Churches, especially at the moment the Anglican Church is fuelling the sort of hatred that results in tragedies, even via the seemingly innocuous Alpha Course.

Those threatening schism and demanding repentance of the Episcopal Church of the US in ordaining Bishop Gene Robinson would be better to seek repentance from perpetrators of homophobic crime who mistakenly see approval to hate in such so-called Christian teaching.

Let’s recognize that basing a view on religion doesn’t exempt it from critical moral scrutiny. (Slaveholders quoted the bible too.)

only if the church is advocating action.

there is a fine line between saying that homosexuality is a sin and you shouldn't do it, and saying that homosexuality is a sin and must be punished.
speech where the intent is an action that hurts someone else should NOT (at least in the US it isn't) be protected under free speech.

of course, another example is the klan. they have the right to assemble and say white power and all that crap, but they have a right to to say it. you can't punish someone just because you don't like what it is they're saying. that's not the way free speech works. i may think that there is no such thing as race, only melanin content, but that doesn't mean other people have to as well. as long as the klan behaves and doesn't go lynch people again or deny them their civil rights.

but you have to realize that there are crazies in every religion and when the priest says, "homosexuals live in sin" the crazy person thinks, "yes they live in sin and i must eradicate that sin by killing them".
also, you can't tell if a person is crazy by just looking at them sometimes. the church can make a mistake, but they should admit that, yes we made a mistake, so and so that we said was to be followed is really a crackpot. we'll be more careful next time.
they don't need to apologize. they didn't tell anyone to kill homosexuals.

Homosexuality is a sin. The only stance the church (christian) should have is to stand against it publicly.
Your facts are mixed as to how the evangelical church (so-called) feels about it. Most churches have left Christianity and embraced a neo-paganism tolerance towards anything the will keep people in the church. With few exceptions (Baptist, Presbyterian, and some Pentecostal) most churches are pro-gay. The Anglican/Episcopal churches were among the first to openly accept practicing gays.

opposition to homosexuality is a sociopolitical difficulty. As you stated, *some* Christians make a great deal approximately it, bringing up the Bible, at the same time as no longer making a great deal approximately different subjects. on the instant, in a distinctive u . s . a . the place many persons are Christian, Christianity is utilized by making use of each and every variety of persons to justify or bolster their comments. Fundamentalist Christians are known for making use of their faith as a controversy for particularly some good-wing regulations. even though it truly is not as seen or vocal, there's a non secular left besides. in present day situations, as you comprehend, it truly is been got here upon that ordinary sexual orientations are patently happening and basically unchangeable. (tries to "convert" gays often consequence in severe psychological misery, and the two fail or reason asexuality.) For political motives and out of homophobic disgust, some people have resisted this concept. by making use of the way, the Bible did no longer initially use the information "abomination" in Leviticus 18:22. It says which you (a guy) shouldn't sleep with men the variety you do with women persons.

Many horrible crimes take place all the time. We do not support or allow drug use just because much more violence occurs in this area than in so called "homophobic" crimes. Any act of violence against another person is done in hatred usually and the designation "hate" crime when a homosexual is involved is unfair to the many others who are victims of crime like women who are beaten. The church needs to strike a balance neither condoning sin including homosexuality nor violence against it. Those caught up in gender disorientation need to know there is hope for them for a normal life if they would like and the church should offer help. Making crimes against homosexuals different than against others does not help matters but actually is harmful to those who are caught up in a life style they really don't want to be in. All people should be treated fairly and with dignity.

In most civilized areas of the world, murder is illegal. There is no such thing as a "hate crime." Either you infringe on someone's rights by initiating aggression, or you do not. Whether you "hate" the person is irrelevant, and the very notion that some crimes are worse than others based on who is targeted reeks of elitism.

Honestly, I don't think this can be blamed on the CHURCH. It's no different than blaming the KKK on white southerners. Yes, that's the majority, but the KKK is spread out, and not every white southerner is in it. Most (not all, obviously) Christians frown on hate crimes, weather it invovles blowing up an abortion clinic or murdering gays. You don't specify what the church is doing to fuel the hate crimes. I find it difficult to believe a church would tell someone to kill, especially this day in age.

Read your bible!!! Being gay is an abomination to God!! I do not agree to go out and physically attach or kill them, because the bible also says though shout not kill. The bible also tells us that not all will hear his word and believe, The bible nor the church teaches hate, we teach truths and not all will listen or believe and we have to except that fact, If people are committing such hanus crimes in the name of the church, then they are hiding behind the church and are not true followers, which the bible will also explain and are also an abomination. I am hardshell baptist and am strong in my beliefs, all we can do is teach the word of God, , not judge another his/her wrong doing.

What infuriates me is the lack of indignation and this quick resort to defense by the religious people when it comes to what violence believers are capable of rendering on others in that too in 'good faith'! Why don't people get angry when they hear about suffering of a fellow human being who may be different from them?

They will give u passages on virtues of their own faith but the point is ending of the violence and not your self-righteousness.
