the basics make quite a list and i'm not going to be able to cover it in detail but here goes. a tent with stakes and lines as needed. set it up before you go to be sure you understand how to and that you have everything you need. bedding- either sleeping bags or blankets to and ground pads or air mattresses. make sure you have enough to sleep warm, shivering makes for a long night and it might be a lot colder where you are going. clothing- what ever is needed for the season plus rain gear and jacket. take easily washable stuff that is comfortable and wears well. a change of clothes for every other day works well. footwear- good solid boots if you're going to be hiking otherwise any good shoe or sneaker. extra socks. cook gear- stove or campfire grate with a frypan, large and small covered pots, coffee pot, plates and silverwere. cleaning supplies - if you're cooking over a fire include either sos pads or other scrubbing pads. camp tools- hatchet or small axe, camp saw, small shovel, rope or parachute cord, duct tape, first aid kit, a 10x12 tarp, flashlights and lantern, matches, firestarters. food- things that require as little refregeration as possible and that are simple to store, prepare, and clean up after. a small broom or brush to keep the tent cleaned out. if you are planning a major vacation spend a night out in the yard or at a nearby campground as a trail run. don't be afraid to ask for help. all campers start out not knowing what they were doing and are glad to help a new camper get started. have fun ad relax when something goes wrong, and it will. you'll laugh about it later.

You should talk with the other people you will be camping with. Most camping equipment is best when split between people. You can share a tent with a friend. You can use one tarp shelter for 4 or 5 people. A camp stove can be enough for the whole campsite. Cooler and food is easier when multiple go in together. You will personally need: toilet paper water bottle flashlight clothes sleeping bag backpack or two to hold it all

Glen t covered it pretty well...I will add enough food in a plastic container (dry, bug free) for the dog and in many places you need to have proof of rabies with you. We were harassed in IL by park officials saying we had to have the paperwork on our dogs (no the tags were not considered proof) - that is something most people dont carry with them. No our dogs never bit anyone...including the unruly children who ran through our campsite. But a lesson learned also. Better to have it with you in the glovebox than be asked to leave for not having it. Or, alternately, don't go to state campgrounds.
