The usual problem when CPU spikes to 100% is some sort of spyware sitting on the machine. Download and run SPYBOT and ADAWARE. After you run those two go download and run Ewido (www.ewido.net).

If there is any spyware that will get rid of it. The next thing to check is what is running at startup. Click start, run, then type msconfig hit enter and check the startup tab. All the items checked are running when the machine starts up. Do some yahoo or google searches for things you don't recognize and uncheck the things that are not needed.

Defragment or optimise your hard drive, and go through the programs that you are running simultaneously, even the ones that are supposed to optimise your system's efficiency, and disable them one at a time, and find the cycle hogs. If you can, eliminate them. Don't have too many applications open at once. If you can add ram (Memory), go to crucial.com, have your computer's model info ready, and use their memory selector. I doubled my memory for $32. More memory means less cpu work- it doesn't have to break large chunks of data up into small ones because there is not enough memory- and it doesn't constantly have to go to the hard drive.
Consider a video card upgrade- the more work it does, the less your cpu does.
Clean up your hard drive- get rid of .tmp files and data you no longer need.
If these measures are not adequate, then your computer needs a cpu upgrade, and it's probably cheaper to buy a new one.
Always back up your data outside your computer. I do mine on an outboard hard drive.
If you want more advice, try C-net.

It's not the legitimate services causing the problem, it's probably junk you loaded on. Sort the task list by CPU usage, and see what is using the most clock cycles. Google what you find to see if these are adware/spyware or just junk you don't need, and dump them.

I would run defrag, scan disk, erase all files that you don't need, or better yet it sounds like you need a larger hard drive and some more memory
