People sprain their ankles all the time in boots that they wear or sneakers and they still have the big gravel rocks everywhere you walk. What's the purpose of those big rocks being everywhere you walk over here?

The gravel is to keep the dust down and to allow for better drainage when it rains. As you are probably aware the region is extremely dry most of the year but when the rain comes the ground is unable to absorb the water and forms huge puddles. The gravel helps cut down on this water and some of the damage it can do if it is left to sit (think electrical and health hazards).

The sand in Iraq is centuries of silt deposted by the Tigris, and when it gets wet, it turns into a heavy, thick clay. Just walking 100m in it and you will have pounds of it on your boots. The gravel keeps you out of the mud. However, walk through the mud and then the gravel and all that mud will pick up gravel. Thank God the rainy season doesn't last that long.

Have you been over there in the winter yet? Probably not because all of that dust turns into a Glue like Mud!! They do put it down too thick if you ask me.

Wait until it rains.

There is nothing more vile than Iraqi mud.

To try to keep the dust down maybe, even though all there is is dirt.
