You should wait the full 6 weeks.
The time is to allow your cervix to fully close and any episiotomy(if you had one) to heal. Otherwise, you risk infection from sitting in unsanitary water for too long. Now, you can take a sitz bath... (sitting in not more than an inch or 2 of warm water for no more than 5 minutes to ease stitch pain, but that is it)

I cannot imagine why your doctor would suggest you wait.
You can take a bath anytime you want, make sure the tub is clean and don't use any fancy scented products in the bath.
Soaking in a tub is one of the best pain relievers for sore tender bottoms post birth.

I recommend listening to your doctor. Your cervix is open so it is at risk for infection. My doctor had me take a "sitz" bath in the hospital tub right after the birth and from what I could tell it was nothing different from a regular bath except for the Epsom salts and water jets. But again, don't put yourself at risk.

I was allowed to take a bath as soon as I was released from the hospital and I did, it did not effect me, but every Dr. is different and have there own ways so I would recommend you listen or at least call the office and ask the reasoning behind it!!

Why did the doctor said that? If it is normal delivery i don't think you have to wait becuase there was a lot of sweat and bleeding right? and with out washing it stinks.
Me after I gave birth i Imidiately went to bath. You have to ask your Dr. and if it is convincing you have to wait.
Good luck!

Right after birth you can take a warm bath.It would freshen you up after the bloody wonderful miracle delivery.
This would help healing and avoid infection with your incision if you will have any.
hygiene is very important especiall y when you start breastfeeding.

i had one 5 days after giving birth, as i had sutures, as i had a second degree tear, and the midwife that came to my home to check my baby and myself told me to have a salt bath every day, as this would help to heal. i used table salt in a warm bath.

You made quite a few sacrifes to keep your baby safe inside you... 6 weeks should be enough to sacrifice a bath for YOUR safety and health. If your doctor suggested this, then you should listen. Otherwise, you'll be back here asking us for advice on what to do about an infection... or worse. Take care and listen to your doctor.

the answer to that depends on how fast you heal. healing took about 4 weeks with my first and 2 weeks with my second.
i took baths after i stopped bleeding only because i thought sitting in bloody water was discusting. but i think it depends how fast of a healer you are.
