My husband is in the military and it was free for us... we have our own hospitals and clinics too. Medications are free too. The only thing we have to pay as dependents is dental... but it's only like $20-40 a visit. Back in 1990 when my little sister was born my parents paid $2,000 in payments and we didn't have insurance. My sister has a 3 year old and she paid about the same. However, she had her second at 6 months and he was in the NIC for 2 days before passing away. They are still asking her for $90,000.00 for his 2 day stay. Jerks!!! It all depends on your insurance and how the delivery goes. Good Luck!!!

Free in the UK (such a caring progressive country compared to those across the pond) - but hang on - don't forget the £100,000 pounds it will cost in lost wages over the following 16 years ... oh, and the clothes ... and the food ... and the holidays .... and the birthday and Christmas presents .... and the ruined furniture because the little angel wants a cat to play with .... and later on the burn holes in the sofa .... and the wine stains on the carpet ... the vomit in the back seat of the car ... and eventually the hair dye that you will need to cover up the grey patches caused by worry when darling son/daughter doesn't arrive home until 3.30 a.m. ...... now the question should be: "why would you decide to have children?"
Okay, today is my 30th wedding anniversary, two kids, both brilliant people .... I would do it all again (I think).

I'm in the same situation. I'm currently paying for insurance through the COBRA law, and it's more than we can afford, so we're considering dropping it. My doctor practices alone, so she only delivers at one hospital, so we're going to be contacting them about costs. A friend of ours said a c-section at that hospital is $3000, but I don't know if they were quoted for just the surgery or for the hospital stay for mom and baby for 2 days in addition to that. The obstetrician's fee is $2200 to deliver the baby. That gives you a rough idea. You should call whatever hospitals your doctor services and ask them for prices. Some hospitals won't admit you for delivery without insurance, unless it's an emergency. Then, they might admit you for the emergency care, and transfer you for recovery to a county or state facility. Each hospital is different in their costs. Also, remember that the payment plans are financed with what's usually a high interest rate. They also might require credit card payment, so if you don't have one that could be a problem. Make sure to ask these things well in advance of pre-registering.

well, it depends. Do you have any insurance? We have good insurance and it still cost us $1200. I know the hospital we went to gives assistance...for example, if a 3-person family makes less than 50K per year, they cut your bills in half...so its worth checking in to.
As far as costs without insurance...the hospital should provide a cost sheet when you first "apply" to have the baby there. It really depends on the hospital.
"From pregnancy test through delivery, anywhere between $6,800 and $10,600. Your insurance company is picking up much of the tab,"
Also, I recommend going to pregnancyweekly.com and joining the message boards. You will be able to talk with women as far along as you but also to ask questions like these from other people who have just done the same thing.

Having had 3 kids in filthy badly run NHS hospitals run by maniacal nurses who should have had a career as prison wardens I strongly suggest you have it at home (that's what I'm doing next time)

In the UK its free at the point of delivery.
But we all pay for it through taxes. With the state of the NHS at present I doubt anyone could tell you how much it costs.
