They can be, especially if they have stopped taking their medication. They usually are more of a threat to themselves. Often mentally ill people will stop taking their medication because they feel better. They cannot understand the reason they feel better is BECAUSE of the medication. If they are properly diagnosed and given the treatment they need, they can often lead fairly normal lives. If you know someone that is mentally ill and they become agitated, try to remain calm and get help as soon as possible. Notify the police and inform them that the person has a mental illness. If you know what specific mental illness the person has, let them know so they can respond appropriately.

great answer ohst87... you get my mouseclick when the time comes :)
the answer is yes and no.. I am bipolar.. so from first hand experience I would say something like 25% a danger to myself when depressed .. 25% a danger to those around me when manic..
and whatever the normal percentage might be inbetween the swings in my affliction..
I would say schizophrenics are not quite as dangerous .. other than being mentally different they are somewhat stable .. most are well adjusted to their affliction to be able to know when they are getting out of charachter.. watch out for the ones that refuse to accept their illness.
when medicated properly I would say as a whole, the mentally ill are no more dangerous than the rest of society.. even normal people have bad days, right?
then there are the hannibal lectors of the world... chances are they are already removed from the outside world.. and are no longer a danger to society..
there are many types of mental illness and many different personalities of those afflicted.. if you have one for a neighbor.. I would say putting bars in your windows to protect yourself is a huge waste of time energy effort and money.. and you just might hurt yourself doing it... playing with powertools is dangerous..
it's all relative

First off, what is normal? This is decided by the people of the society in which they live, in other words people judging people. There is no such thing as normal or abnormal, just a continuum of behavior that humans do. We all fall somewhere on that continuum. Is cannibalism normal? well only if you're a cannibal, there if you did not participate in cannibalism you would be considered weird or mentally deficient. But, for those who do suffer from a chemical imbalance that affects mood or thinking and behavior, they are ten times more likely to be a victim of violence than a perpetrator of violence. What does that say about the so-called sane portion of society. Is murder abhorrent? Well, yes of course. So what about any type of gang member who participates in violence and/or murder, would he/she not be mentally ill? To take another persons life requires so much hate or depravity that to most of us, it is not even possible to comprehend. The truly mentally ill are so afraid of the rest of society that they cower and become prey for the evil portion of society.

not at all. even the crazy guy on the street talking to himself and thinking he is the king of the world. Statistically, from the mentally ill demographic, at most 2% are also violent criminals. Furthermore there is no hard science that a mentally ill person who is violent, is so because of her or his "mental illness"

what is the diagnosis..a person with mental illness could be someone who has a developmental disorder such as autism or adhd. or RARELY someone with schizophrenia may be so paranoid that they are compative. people who are termed sociopaths are personality disordered (i'll need to double check this) more then they are mentally ill.

no, unless they are a danger to themselves(suicidal thoughts) or feel so pissed they want to go out and hurt anyone. but most of the time, they are the quiet shy ones who have great lovable hearts and sensitivity.
