Poverty may not be the cause of mental illness, but the result of it. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of disability in the US. Some people with mental illness have not worked a lot and don't have a lot of income or property. They may not qualify for full disability, but may be eligible for SSI. The SSI payment for an eligible individual is $603 per month.
Its very difficult to live on $603 a month. That doesn't pay for housing alone in some places.

No financial problems or just growing up poor is not a cause. How ever, the things that happen more frequently in the poor neighborhoods do have an effect on the persons mind...

Gang's, drug's, prostitution, graffiti, all types of arrests for all types of crime.

Untreated mental illness certainly is..
I am bipolar with a horrible social life and a great professional one.. someday I may not be so fortunate.. but for now I get by pretty good.
Without medication.. would be a different story..
Draw your own conclusions. :)
