I drive for a living and frequently travel between 600-1000 km a day. I probably see thousands of cars on the road each day but I rarely see an accident on the highway, maybe one every 4-5 days at the most. Most of the accidents that I do see appear to have been caused by inattention or tiredness of the part of the driver.
If you stop to stretch your legs every couple of hours you will probably have a pleasant trip. Depending on where you will be going, most US states have rest areas every 20-50 miles on the interstates. Canada is not so fortunate but there are still plenty of roadside places where one can pull over.
Do most of your driving when you are fresh. For me this getting up reasonably early and stopping by dinner time. Try not to drive east at daybreak or west at dusk so that the sun isn't blinding.
Have a good breakfast and then eat light meals until you stop for the night. Eating a heavy meal and then driving may make you feel sleepy. Sing. Listen to music. Have a window cracked a little to let fresh air in.
Be alert and a defensive driver. Anticipate what the other driver may do. Look ahead and be ready for the unexpected.
Driving is safe! I have been driving for over 30 years and have driven all over North America. It is my opinion that driving is very safe.

Statistically you're safer traveling by air.
How safe or dangerous a road journey will be will depend largely upon where you are traveling. A journey of that distance would be relatively safe in the US or Western Europe. It would be exceedingly dangerous in parts of Africa.

Statistically, the safest form of ground transportation is by bus, then rail. Otherwise, the safest way to travel is by commercial airline.
