well, first off ignore the people who suggested the Sony..... with those camera you're just paying for the name + have to use SONY's expensive MEMORYSTICK cards with them.
Most professional Photographers recommend Nikon, Fuji, Canon or Konica-Minolta.... Olympus aren't too bad either.
There's plenty of good reviews at this site:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html which helped me choose my digital camera.... a Fuji Finepix A345
Some good points you should watch out for:
Optical Zoom lens - provides the best quality
Batteries - make sure it doesn't use them up quickly & also uses off the shelf types such as AA or AAA instead of one designed only for use in that brands camera, otherwise one day you'll end up having trouble finding a replacement.
Of the reviews on that site, and depending on your budget, I'd suggest looking at these cameras:

Get one that is over 5 million pixels, has a telephoto zoom and is able to store in jpeg format. Also use memory cards. The smaller ones are for fun and the ones that are about $1,000 are for more professional. but hte small ones can provide good quality. If you get lines, then there is "noise" in the picture taking. Ask to use one in store and see the pictures that are taken for any defects like field of depth (where the point where the focus is) and distortion on the lenses (something like fish eye). Avoid them and choos ones with zoom and USB compatability.

They are all pretty good these days, depends on what you want to spend. Get the highest pixels combined with the best quality lens. Dont be fooled by digital zoom, its really meaningless. Optical Zoom is what counts.

I have a Sony Cybershot. It's way awesome. It has tons of features and works really well. Plus I got a good deal on it at Best Buy. I've had it for two years and haven't had any problems with it yet!
