In Word go to Tools, AutoCorrect Options. There you can customize the Auto Correct features to suit you needs.
For more help in Word go to Help, Microsoft Word Help or hit F1.
Type in Auto Correct and click Search

Go to Tools, then Autocorrect Options... then clear the "Replace Text As You Type" checkbox.
