In a free society we should not silence the bigot, but we should certainly shun the bigot.

Let’s recognize that basing a view on religion doesn’t exempt it from critical moral scrutiny. (Slaveholders quoted the bible too.)

I agree. As repulsive as their opinions may be, in a free society they must be allowed to speak, but that doesn't mean any of us have to give them our attention.

No, we should laugh at them, ridicule them and hold them out as an example of what lack of education can do to people. If we shun them, people might began writing satirical stories about them that someday become the basis for a religion.

agree to the point that if we are talking bigotry as it relates to world views. politics, etc..We just need to a point stop and say: "we must agree to disagree'' - if the 'bigot' wants to be listened he/she must also listen, if they won't then ----bye bye. If we shun them without trying to explain our point of view or to try to enlighten them, then we miss an opportunity. BUT if they are dumb - dumb and won't listen, then yes, shun them =- not worth the efort.

Also, I have found that if I hear a bigot saying 'derogatory words in our home, for example, I ask them politily to quit and explain why" If they don't quit then I have asked them to please leave, as we don't accept the behaviour in our home - we have only had to do it a couple of times in our 26 years of married. One asked to be 'forgiven' and told us they didn't realize we felt so strongly about this or that (he completely missed the point, but at least he apologized). The other one has not spoken to us since then! No loss for us - definitely for him

It's not that simple. What exactly do you think we *should* tolerate? Should we tolerate child molesters? How about arsonists? Where do you draw the line between things you disagree with, but think should be allowed, and things you disagree with and you think should be outlawed? There are no easy answers.

I agree completely.

It should become socially unacceptable in a free and educated society.
