SP2 is an uninstallable pack. I suggest uninstalling it, or using XP's System Restore.
Unfortunately there's a lot of people out there that have had the same problem upgrading to SP2 from their otherwise perfectly working systems. SP2 likes to be installed right after the OS is installed, and before all your apps.
If you really need SP2, you MAY need to back up all your data and do a fresh OS install (wiping the previous install)

The first thing I would try is disabling any network connections, including Internet connection, and unmapping any mapped drives you may have out there (just write down the info so you can re-enable/remap after the install.) Also close out of or exit as many programs in your system tray (the little icons down by the time) as you can.
This is what I had to do to get mine installed.
Make sure you are giving it at least 30 minutes before you consider it hanging up. It can take a while.
