Because auto manufacturers recognize that people should be given the freedom of choice as to whether they drive fast or not. Cars are also sold in areas where there are higher speed limits, or even none at all, so a car that would only do 70 wouldn't sell well.

A vehicle that is capable of driving at 120 mph is more efficient, and less stressed at 75mph. The added ability is actually quality engineering that ensures that the vehicle's maximum output exceeds the driver's needs when said driver operates it within lawful performance parameters. Put simply, a horse can run at 40 miles an hour but doing so will more quickly wear it out. Same for horse power.

For two reasons: 1) Because they aren't put in jail if someone is killed by a speeding motorist; and 2) Because people in some countries need a car with that ability as a status symbol, like wearing a Rolex watch is a status symbol.

Because by law, car manufacturers aren't required to limit the maximum speed of vehicles. And if one car company were to do so voluntarily, I would expect they wouldn't be very profitable afterwards, as many people like to drive fast and don't like to be limited in terms of speed.

My truck shuts down @ 98 MPH. My Saab will run 140, I know that both of my vehicles have reached their top speed while in my care. I like to take the Saab down to an abandoned air port and run it on the runways for fun.... That is why they make go fast!!!!!

What about emergencies?
What if you NEED to drive fast? Say a there's something or someone chasing you, or someone in the car is having a heart attack...there are reasons.
