You can't go wrong with either Canon, Nikon or Olympus. These guys have been making cameras for a long time and carry the whole range from beginner to professional.

I have had 2 Kodak's a 3.1 and a 5.1 Mp..
The first one didn't survive overturning a canoe .. :*( the second one I have had for about 18 months.. never had a problem with either of them.. and the one I currently have is about the best I have seen for price/options was about $220.. totally worth it
I am hooked on digital cams.. never going back to film.. ever

Nikon & Fuji.... plenty of reviews here:

Nikon have practically always been the professional's first choice for both Film & Digital cameras and lenses.
Fuji are pretty good.
Sony are regarded as just paying for a name.

If price is no object, go with Nikon. A good camera, that is high in quality, for a fair price, go with Cannon.
