Unfortunately not. Illegal immigration is considered a federal problem and does not fall under the jurisdiction on local authorities. The local police can arrest illegals and detain them for the federal immigration officials to deal with, but they don't have to. Chief of Police is a political position though, so you can put pressure on him to do more about the problem.

Although, a Federal Law enacted in 1996 give local police the authority to arrest illegal aliens and turn them over to federal authorities for deportations, few local police actually do this because it is not required. I would form a group of local concerned citizens and talk to your local elected officials about seeing that the local police do arrest illegal aliens.

Yes, you can. Show your opinion at the ballot. Vote for a mayor and/or sheriff that supports your viewpoint. Legal decisions have made it legal for local law enforcement to do so.
But you might instead encourage the arrest of employers of illegal aliens. It would be far more effective, and throw some jobs back into the US economy.

Seriously, it is a matter of the collective opinions between your District Attorney and Cheif of Police.. most are very aware of the law.. but take an 'out of sight, out of mind' approach .. they will not get the benefit of the doubt in court for a first time offense like any US citizen would.. but beyond that .. they are not likely to see a courthouse unless they did something that you would have to do to get there..
The police are merely puppets controlled by the strings held by those above them on the chain of command.. Start at the top or you will find yourself wasting your time... and if you are writing here at 3 am.. Just like me.. you seem to have plenty :)

Only by voting and getting in touch with your elected officials. Colorado recently passes a law to have their state enforcement officers pick them up, and there is a 'zero tolerance zone' allong the Rio Grande where they do it too, not to mention one sherriff in Arizona. However, at the moment state enforcement seems to be the exception to the rule.

when arresting people who are doing illegal things, is their job, i think they are responsible, but they are not doing their job.its that way all over the united states.
