one of my co-workers has sores around his mouth this morning, he is also complaining about chest pains.
What could it be that is wrong with him? He says that he has flu, but these are open sores and I have never heard of anyone getting flu that gave you sores like these.
Is he infectious?

Yes, it sounds like a mouth herpes! Stay away from him and tell him nicely he should go see the doctor.

This could be just fever blisters....every time I get sick with a cold or flu I get them. Yes fever blisters are a type of herpes and can be spread but this person if he has the flu really needs to be seen by a doc. A good medicine for the blisters is abreva inform this person about it. It is a bit pricey but well worth the money as the blisters will go away after about 3 treatments.

Without his seeing a doctor, there is no way of knowing. There are many "sores" that are not at all contagious. Did you know you can get cold sores from the flu (lots of them if you are prone to them) and they can be open and look really nasty! By the way, cold sores, are contagious.

Ewww! Tell him to go to the doctor! I'd steer clear of him until he gets better or stays home. Start wearing a surgical mask whenever he's around and maybe he'll get the hint.

It could be an STD or something. It sounds pretty creepy to me, i wouldn't get to close. Don't make it obvious though because it will hurt his feelings, I mean he's gotta feel pretty bad as it is walking around like that anyways.
