to support the non religious people who aren't comfortable with talking to the religious chaplains. Sometimes it's hard to talk to them because I have my beliefs, but I don't want to somehow offend them when I talk about them since they are religious. I have issues with religion influincing the rules and supporting predjudices that lie within the military, but I'm not trying to be disrespectfull when I talk about my views. They aren't there to cause other's grief, but they do sometimes. It's hard talking to someone who tells you you are wrong because god says so when You don't believe in the god that they are talking about.

Yah the psychologysts are ok sometimes, but it still puts that stigma on your medical records that is recorded. The religious people who talk to the chaplan don't have that documented, so there's no way of people going back to it and saying stuff like oh, this guy has been to mental health, so they must have issues...

I'm sure the military has psychologists. People go to priests and chaplains and their respective religious counselor for just that .. to be counseled. That's what psychologists do without bringing religion into it.

Kind of puts a kink in the word Chap-lain. But if you're talking U.S. military, you probably could get away with it since here just recently they tried to invoke law to prevent Chaplain's from publicly praying "In Jesus Name". Yes it is true, check it out, with the American Center for Law and Justice, (past news). When I was in the U.S. Army we had a Satanic Chaplain.(Also true). Just goes to prove that some freedoms our young servicemen and women die for are real freedoms. Our freedom of religion and expression are displayed here very often. Maybe not in the best light (colorful to be sure) but a freedom none the less. By the way I am a Christian and I don't think they should have an atheist chaplain, nor a satanic chaplain, in the military. If it happens then I up hold that freedom for others, it just means I have to get more brothers and sisters to vote the next time around. That is democracy and Christianity in action. Two very important things I would like see happen. God Bless You,

Criminy. Atheists gone wild. I thought atheists were more of the roughneck, "I don't need no crutch" type.

Do you think you want atheist chaplains because you feel oppressed by the religious ones, or is it more because you don't like religion? Any decent chaplain wouldn't browbeat a nonbeliever the way you imply. I have a feeling the issue isn't as cut and dry as you make it.

Anyways there's got to be some counselling service, the psychologist suggestion was the real answer to this question.

Hard to have an atheist chaplain. Being atheist is not a religion. As an atheist you chose not to believe in a god or a devil, heaven or hell. So how can you have a Chaplin, or any type of religious leader for that matter that supports the belief of nothing??? Hard to do.

"There are no atheists in foxholes!"

An atheist chaplain is an oxymoron. A military chaplain provides spiritual and pastoral support for service personnel, including the conducting of religious services in the field. An atheist is one who does not believe in the existence of a deity. The military has other support systems in place for non-spiritual concerns.

Since atheism isn't a religion it would be silly putting a chaplan for something that doesn't have...well a religion. A practical solution might be a psychologist, a support group or councellor.

There are atheist chaplains in the military.

They're normally called First Sergeant, or "top."

Sometimes, they are called other things, but they are always good to talk to when you have personal problems. They will help you prioritize issues confronting you.

(anyone who has been in the military will hopefully recognize the sarcasm intended by this remark)

yes because some one might have a problem and may not want that chaplains religion shoved down their throat- i have met and talked to some pretty aggressive chaplains. Sometimes people may want to just talk, you can still counsel someone without religion playing a part in it.

If we are paying for religious chaplains to be there we should be paying for atheists 'chaplains' to be there. Freedom of religion means freedom for everyone...even atheists to be free from religion.
