Best answer i can think of is go to a gun shop and look at several different pistols and see which fits your hand the best. you will also want to get a pistol that you can handle. while a 44 special bull dog may fit your hand well you probable wont want to shoot it enough to get good with it, must remember that when you pull the trigger that bullet is going to go somewhere and you will want to practice enough to make sure it goes where you want it too. some ideas for self defense calibers would be 32 acp, 32 mag, 38 special, 9 mm, 40 s&w, 357 sig, and 45 acp. Your choice will depend on your body size and what you feel comfortable with.

It's gonna depend on circumstances, foes, and carrier. For a lady, going from work to car, a snub nosed 38 will be fine. For a soldier against another soldier, you'll need something with a little more OOMPH. The 1911's a good weapon.
My personal favorite is the Sig-Sauer. For "self defense, general purpose" I'd go with the 9mm. In a trained hand, it's enough. I prefer the option of shoot to wound. The bigger shot 45's are impressive, and intimidating, but you'll pretty much kill anyone you hit. This is O.K. in combat, but can lead to civil problems that'll leave ya bankrupt and in jail under any other than ideal circumstances.

I carry a .45 1911, the Springfield XD-.45 is supposed to be great. XD-9, XD-40, XD.357 sig.

The best thing is just shoot a bunch of different pistols to see what works best for you, but NOTHING under 9mm or .38

Anyone trying to use a gun for self defense that does not know how to use it or what it is capable of, is an idiot. If you don't know what to carry, go to a gunstore and get some training before you kill an innocent person. Don't ruin it for the rest of us.

anything compact and easy to conceal. a proper permit is required for carry. many people rave about the merit of the kahr arms p9. compact and powerful. north american arms makes a great pocket pistol in calibers from .17 hmr all the way to .32 acp. those are quite affordable and dependable. they come in semi auto and single action. just search for the company. it really all depends on what it is you are looking for.

Why do you need a carry-on pistol and what are you carrying it onto? You need a permit for concealed a weapon and what is your need to conceal it? Who are you going to use it on? Pistols aren't allowed on planes.

Glock 19. It's small and easy to shoot, holds plenty of ammo and is very accurate out to 25 yards. Most shootings happen at 7 yards or less.
