Indigestion, irritation of the stomach cause by eating something that doesn't agree with you so if you take an antacid like tums or eno the hiccups will go away. An old wives tale is that if you have the hiccups it means someone is thinking about you and if you guess who it is by saying the persons name out loud then the hiccups will go away right after you guess the right person. Try it sometimes the hiccup go away after you say the first name.

Hiccups are developed very early in the life of the foetus and seem to be associated with getting water through the gills when we were more like fish than humans. I don't believe this, but that is what people say!

When you hiccup, your diaphram spasms. This spasm is out of sync with your normal breathing. Usually a few well concentrated slow deep breaths is the best cure for e hiccups.

This question was answered a while ago. It is usually due to irritation of the phrenic nerve. The phrenic nerve is the nerve that controls the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that controls your breathing, and it located under your lungs. When the phrenic nerve is irritated, it sends irregular electrical impulses down to the phrenic nerve, causing your diaphragm to contract.
