why do some people let others down just to feel better about themselves?

So and when they try and let us down, do they just say crap or what they really see as a weak point?

Sure it's often obvious and always pathetic. But you answered your own question- "to feel better about themselves".

I'm taking the word 'let' to mean 'put' here. People put each other down, because they like to feel superior. It doesn't make them superior, but they feel that way for a little while- if the other person is less.

It's a temporary thing- the feeling of superiority they get. If they were really better, they see that they don't need to put someone else down to be ok themselves. Again, it's in comparing ourselves to others- we always lose. And some people just haven't recognized this, yet.

Those people whom you mention commonly be less efficient in their part of work. Letting others down is a way to disguise their poor efficieny of work. Moreover they love themselves more than others and never like themselves to be degraded in any situation. Even in a friendly chat, either to prank on someone, they don't do in a sportive manner but really try to insult in some way or the other. We cant fight them to say, what they are doing is wrong b'coz their ego will never allow them to listen to others. After all a wisest person listens and takes a good advice of even a very ordinary person. We meet many people with this behaviour in our life. Actually we must feel pity, b'coz they're mentally weak and less sportive in taking up things. If we are sportive in that sense, our mind will never get affected from their comments. After all let us be more wise than those type of people.

This kind of person is hiding their own weaknesses in order to cover up for their own misgiving and maybe some sort of abuse, There might even be a border line personality with this type of person. when some is so negative and all they can do is instill fear into your life which causes anxiety which usually ends in depression. If they can keep you in fear they will continue to do so. Sounds also like narcissistic behavior. it means self love. everything is about them. this sounds like you would need positive reinforcement in your relationships. I you think you can you will . Don't let them predict your future. no one can. only you choose what you do in life and if your mind is thinking with your feelings or your thought without emotion. emotion can get you into trouble if your thinking process is conformed that way. you have to use logic when decision making not feeling

It's all about someones self esteem, when some one puts another down it's because they find a strengh and a characteristic in that person that they lack. By seeing one person hurt over something, makes them feal spechal them selfs. I know it's sad. But look at it this way, it's is a form of human nature. Weather or not it's right.

from my own point of view, i consider such species as the insecure and unhappy with their lives. they do such things to compensate their feelings, to make that nobody would be happy just like them. "misery loves company" is their motto in life.
