The Toyota Matrix is a fantastic car! My wife and I have one, it's an '03 and it runs like a dream, it's very responsive and zippy and extremely safe! High ratings on all the insurance tests 4-5 stars.
We have an XR, it's stylish and very roomy! The back seats fold down completely flat, we've helped friends move, to their amazement and fit a 36" tv, large printer and cabinet in there all at once.
It's cavernous inside and comfortable on long trips. Terrific on gas mileage, too. We went on a long trip, roughly 7 hours, on one full tank of gas, it was amazing.
It has lots of great amenities including a regular plug in outlet for cellphones, computers, small electronics and an awesome sound system!
The maintenace is a snap too, since it (truthfully) likes regular unleaded gas - not plus or premium - and needs oil changes only once every 5,000 mi.
www.cars.com is the best way to find one in your area.
Hope this helps, feel free to visit the site I built to show off our Matrix - http://www.kingdomgraphics.biz/bubblesthematrix/

a powerful magnum if you can find one at that price *drool*. If you want a commuter then go for the corolla, need more space then try a matrix they are good on gas. PT Cruiser give you comfortable space with a great design. In the end its all up to you.

Be smart!!...and, stay away from Chrysler and Ford...
The Matrix or Corolla would be terrific choices. And, they'll give you a much better resale value than the aforementioned vehicles. One of my vehicles is a '94 Geo Prism Lsi (a Toyota with a bowtie)... and it runs great!! And, other than routine maintenance it hasn't given us any problems (guess that's why we still have it!)....

As from my experience, toyota cars have been very reliable and durable for many years if maintained well. In my opinion, I would advise to buy a corolla as it is great on gas and if maintained well, can last you a very long time!
COROLLA!!!

Get the PT Cruiser....awesome looking car, good mehanically and will really be one of those eye-catching vehicles. My dad is obsessed with them. Chrysler really does make a good car....
