In reference to another post there is no working star wars program in place, we are just as vulnerable to a missile attack today as we were fifty years ago, now the likelihood of a large scale nuclear attack is much much lower without the soviets runnin around, though it is always possible that by some computer error that a launch will take place from either us or the russian silos, afterwards if we don't convince each other that it was a mistake it would probably lead to a full scale nuclear exchange, now that covers the U.S. and Russia, but don't forget the other nuclear nations out there such as Pakistan and India which are pretty much where the U.S. and Soviets were twenty years ago, so on that side of the planet I would say within the next two years that there is a 20% possibility of a nuclear exchange barring any massive change in policy or major event such as some sort of military incident betweent those two countries. It is possible that there could be a nuclear device smuggled and detonated in the U.S. by some terrorist organisation but that would not lead to a nuclear war, unless the perpetrators of such an attack posessed a nuclear arsenal. Let me just say that with today's great technology a nuclear device does not have to be any bigger than a briefcase and with lax border control and nearly unlimited funding for terrorist organisations in addition to lack of intelligence on nuclear material around the world it is very possible that some terrorist organisation may suceed in detonating a device on American soil. Let's all hope that never happens

Nuclear war before 2008??
Slim to none. Nuclear detonation...if we ease up on the war against terrorism, I would say that becomes a more likely possibility.
Right now we're fighting this new war against an enemy that is a combatant one moment and a civilian the next.
We're prepared militarily...however, if we don't get the remnants of FEMA back together, we won't be prepared on the civilian front.

Just the USA and Russia alone have enough to blow up the world many, many times over. If a nuclear war does start, (particularly from the Middle East) American and other nations can not really prepare for a nuclear war, It just wouldnt matter.

Very very slim. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Politicals are tie with eachother, unlike as in past, almost everyone rely on eachother in some way. So a nuclear war would basically send everybody back into stone age. Not because it would destroy everything, but because it would knock down computer which mean no communication, no technology, no radar, etc... So there will be no way to trade items and get stuff around the world.

Let's keep our eyes on the Doomsday Clock, currently at 7 minutes to midnite. When the nuclear experts start fearing the worse and move it closer to midnite, then i'd start worrying. Right now, the odds are not that high as long as cool heads prevail and the nations of the world remember the MAD doctrine.
My fear is the rogue states, rogue leaders and martyrs who may get their fingers on the button. Then the fallacy of the MAD doctrine is shown and once again it seems we'll be staring into the dark abyss of nuclear holocaust.

We probably won't see a Nuclear War, being that Star Wars is in place and fully funtional at this point, but we may see a Nuclear Detonation perhaps by a terrorist group or a militant secret ops.

The state of Israel will use the Iranian's for target practice. They destroyed Iraq's reactor and Syria's, and will not hesitate to wipe out the Iranian's nuclear sites. The vast majority of Iranians are against their President, he rules against the will of the people, much like the United States. Nuclear war depends on Iran's unstable President. Even the Saudis have opened there air space to Israel to wipe out the Iranians! Israel will destroy the Iranian's, despite veiled threats to Kindergartens in the U.S. The more threats they make, they weaker they actual appear.

With the rise of the EU and China and the rejuvenation of Russia it might be averted. However, the more important part is the US civil society getting rid of the belligerent morons who are in power now who think military might is all that is required to be a premier nation.
