An underground train from east coast to west coast that travels at 1200 M.P.H. It would ride on air/vaccum or magnetic field just like the plastic tubes at bank drive up windows. we have the tunneling equipment used in mines, name some problems with this project?

air/vacuum pressure required to make a train filled with people travel at 1200 mph would be ridiculous. your best bet, I'd say, is probably magnetic field. you also have to make sure the system is pretty much foolproof, too - because a malfunction at 1200 mph = hundreds / thousands dead and a front-page headliner.

It cost $21 billion to build the 31 mile long Channel Tunnel at 1994 prices. The approximate east to west coast average distance is 3,000 miles. So you could expecte a bill well in excess of $2.5 trillion dollars.

And tunnels have a major problem that the moving train builds up pressure in front of it (there is nowhere for the air to go), so the speed is very limited - the Channel Tunnel trains only do 60 miles an hour through the tunnel, but reach 190 miles an hour outside it.

Magnetic field just like the German Transrapid train could reach high velocities, though not quite that high.

Creating a vacuum for that much volume is a major task, given the fact that you'd have to take care of constant leakage. While vacuum or even reduced pressure would reduce air friction, it becomes another hazard for the passengers in case of emergencies.

Seismic instability is a major consideration, especially when coupled with vacuum. An above-ground solution would be less hazardous and would not increase the amount of tubing.

The train wouldn't go nonstop, either, but would have several intermediate stops, reducing the maximum achievable speed (acceleration must not become uncomfortable).

Too expensive. There already are so many airplanes in the air every second, that it is not very good idea.

However, underground should be used on Alaska, for connection with the rest of the USA and for connecting settlements in Alaska. Because of soil structure, it would be much easier to build such a tunnel, and much of a trouble with frozen runways would be avoided.

After all, not a bad idea at all.

First and for most would be clearing the way to run your track. If your straight line to the coast ran under my house you better have the money to move me else were. That's if I would sell it at all. Nice idea but to many obstacles in the way I would think. Not to mention the cost of your tunnel. You wouldn't have the money to pay for it. In which case you would have to convince the government to fund it by proving it's worth. Good luck

The speed for one. No way are you going to move something that large that fast. What about seismic activity? Water tables are at different depths. And of course cost. Who is going to pay for it. In the Seattle area they can't even get a Monorail from North Seattle to Downtown in the budget that they claimed. Big fat waste of money. There are too many problems.

locate someone that has a mini van (ideally white). i'm particular someone on your relatives or close associates households have one. this would fit all of you. Then beautify it to the topic of your wedding ceremony. perchance you are able to also locate that wash off paint that they use at motor vehicle dealerships to write down your names on the decrease back window or another particular saying. i'm particular this will be very less costly thinking you're prepared to borrow the van for loose and the in undemanding words fee often is the decorations.

it takes a long time to tunnel, to do somthing at the scale you speak... your looking ...at best 30 yrs. with mulitple machines working around the clock. one thing nobody else mentioned, Land owners...trying to get acces to that amount of real estate would be almost impossible, also this.. dont even think of hauling anything without gettin the teamster unions involved they would see to it that it wouldent get any federal funding or just might get shut down
