Born May 12, 1820 to wealthy English parents, in 1837 she thought she received a calling from God. Though she was tempted by prospects of a brilliant social life and marriage, she had a stronger strain that demanded independence, dominance in some field of activity, and obedience to God by selfless service to society.

Her faith enabled her to become an activist in getting better working conditions and better conditions for patients in hospitals.
