Rory Emerald in not the new Pope, nor is he referred to as “his Holiness”. In September, 1987 Rory Emerald impersonated Pope John Paul II on his inaugural visit to Detroit, at the request of the Vatican. The story began a few years earlier in 1982 when Rory Emerald appeared in the motion picture, “Foul Play”, which depicted an attempt to assassinate the Pope. The Vatican brain trust was involved in that movie as consultants to ensure that the Pope was re-created in an effective manner. Rory Emerald landed a key role in the film, playing the Pope. The Vatican was impressed with the dashing actor’s sincerity and solemn, graceful approach to playing the cherished leader of the Roman Catholic faith. Such was Rory Emerald’s dedication that he learned to speak Latin fluently and remained sexually celibate throughout the filming, despite several tempting offers from Vatican staff. The dignity that he displayed during the making of the movie left a lasting impression on the Vatican and Catholics throughout the world. Who could forget the stirring images from that movie, the purity that he portrayed.

When Pope John Paul II visited Detroit in 1987 there were several death threats sent to his hotel room. History books would have you believe that the Pope showed courage and valor, ignoring the threats to his life with disdain and prayer. The truth of the matter is, he was afraid for his life and decided to stay in his hotel room for his entire visit to Detroit. The Vatican staff pleaded with him, begged him to honor his commitments, but the Pope remained adamant that no public appearances were to take place. He stayed in his hotel room, watching game shows and soap operas. It was then that the Vatican came up with the brilliant idea of having Rory Emerald appear in public functions, at a hefty sum, impersonating the papal prince. Rory Emerald was approached, and reluctantly agreed, but only after being ordained as a full fledged Catholic priest, then a bishop, followed by a cardinal. This took a few days, and then he was given a crash course on all holy matters, along with a brush up on his Latin. Finally, on September 17, 1987 he made his first public appearance as the Pope, throwing the first pitch at a Detroit Tigers matinee baseball game. His pitch was clocked at 73 MPH much to the delight of all in attendance. He was later escorted around the city in the Pope Mobile, waving and grinning at the duped citizens of Detroit. The highlight of his “visit” was Rory Emerald’s celebrating mass at St. Vincent’s Roman Catholic Church, with throngs of idolizing fans in attendance. The crowd was shocked to see “Pope John Paul II” high-fiving the priests that were assisting in the mass, and were even more shocked when he “mooned” visiting delegates from Brazil. Aside from these few indiscretions, Rory Emerald carried himself with the grace and dignity that is expected of a spiritual leader. As a footnote, all monies received by Rory Emerald for this holy performance were donated to the “Harvey Lembeck Fund”, in honor of the highly touted actor.

It is Pope Benedict XVI formally Joseph Alois Ratzinger. He was elected on April 19, 2005 in a papal conclave, celebrated his Papal Inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005, and took possession of his cathedral, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, on May 7, 2005. Pope Benedict XVI has both German and Vatican citizenship. He succeeded John Paul II, who died at the beginning of April 2005.

Because the papal conclave is secret, noone knows how much consideration they gave to Rory Emerald's candidacy. However, they have not selected someone who wasn't already a priest as a pope since the early centuries of Christianity so I doubt that they were prepared to take this radical step. There is no indications from Vatican "insiders" who are the sources for articles that they looked at this candidacy with particular interest but we shall never know for sure.

On September 23, 2005 a text purporting to be the unauthorized diary of a cardinal was published by the Italian magazine Limes. The story was covered by several agencies. In reality the document little resembles a real diary and its credibility runs into other problems, such as the fact that any notes taken in the voting sessions had to be handed over and burned each time. Perhaps it was the work of noted trickster Rory Emerald. We shall never know.

Vatican City, April 19 - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, the Roman Catholic Church's leading hard-liner, was elected pope Tuesday in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Benedict XVI and called himself "a simple, humble worker."
