I know exactly how you feel! I get the same thing when I say I am an Atheist!!! People are surprised when I tell them because I guess most of them assume that I am a Christian.
I have already gone down the religion road and the older I get, I realize organized religion is suited for those who don't think for themselves!
It is prejudism! But it happens to other religions also, like to the Islams and Buddhist and so on and so on!
This country was supposedly built for religious freedom, but people seem to think that they have a right to "Change your mind".
I'm happy the way I am!! Believe it or not, but I have a peaceful life with a loving husband and kids!!!!! I try to teach my kids that it is OK not to believe in a supernatural being!!! I am not hurting anyone by my beliefs! So, please except my friendship or leave me a lone!
Great Question and I hope you get good responses!

No, I don't.
But I can say that I get prejudice too. Oh, you have read my question, and seen the answers I have received, so you know what I'm talking about...
In my country, we atheists form up to 30% of the population, whereas in the United States, you are only about 8%. Sweden has the highest percentage of atheists: something like 80%!
Mostly, the only prejudice I am getting is on here. Where I live, people don't tend to judge because of religious issues. And the only two churches of my town are practically deserted! Hell, I wonder what that means?

Some people assume that because they are unsure were you draw your basic sense of right from wrong. With most other world views you can have a good idea of how someone would react to a certain thing or environment. With atheist the only baseline is there is no baseline. Your personal sense of right and wrong may be agreeable to most other people but some may use their belief in no higher power as a license for immorality.

Well, try not to mind those prejudiced people out there. Personally, I don't think you're bad and/or immoral just because you're an Atheist.
Heck, one of my good friends from the old country is a staunch Atheist and we've gotten along famously since we met some five years ago... We've covered a lot of ground in our discussions including our own personal beliefs, in fact.
Be well and Peace be with you!

When I hear that someone is an atheist (or agnostic) I automatically associate it with being open minded....but I am also an atheist.
I'm surprised....usually when this sort of question is asked there are a lot more people chiming in on the atheists are of the devil speech. Maybe the time of day changes the type of people who are online....or maybe, just maybe people are starting to figure out that atheists are no more moral or immoral than any other person. (one can hope)
edit....the two that posted while I was typing broke my momentary bit of hope...thanks guys.

Neither, it just sounds like to me a little unsure of what u believe. I don't believe there are really any atheists. U have to believe that there is a higher being. you believe that u are going to wake up in the morning, or keep an appointment etc. Nobody that is breathing can't say that there is not someone or something that keeps everything moving, just take a look at the birds the sky, a tree. Someone has to be in charge of all this. Man can't do it, he's not smart enough, case in point, You.

I'm not a christian but I do believe in God. I don't think atheists are bad or immoral. I think having a mind of your own and coming to your own conclusions is a good thing. Many atheists I've read on this site seem to be intelligent and have studied various beliefs, and are actually more open and tolerant than the christians I've been reading.

I don't think your a bad person or immoral, just don't have the faith and religion I do...
Your still human right...
We all want to be happy on this earth, I agree, but I also want to go to heaven and be even more Happy..
Being a good person very important, I am thinking Yahoo Answers may be bring the bad out of everyone, and that goes for Christians as well..
See to much fighting on the board we are suppose to be learning on..

I don't know you therefore I can only look at ur past questions and answers. Your questions against God and Christians are very sad on ur part. You make jokes and accusations that Christians can't think for themselves. You insult Christians by calling them names. The incompetent part is that you have already asked this question before. I don't know exactly what are you seeking but I do know this that you are not who you say you are. I believe that atheism doesn't exist. Why? Because everyone that I have encounter on here has a background for as religion, in other words, they have believed in God in the past or hurt by Christianity. I don't know exactly yours but I do know that by you asking this question again that you are hurting from something. Why spend time on this site if you have a good, happy life? Did you go see ur father and say Happy Father's Day? Morals comes from God. Life is temporary! You are perpetrating! Go back to God and reconcile with ur family! Praying 4 ya!

You know, I have to admit that I never knew people actually felt that way about atheists until I came to Answers.
The fact is that it doesn't take religion or beliefs in a deity to make a person moral, happy, kind, generous, loving, artistic, imaginative, etc.
I've kind of been blown away by this attitude since I've come here. I begin to wonder if the people I know feel this way and never express it until they are anonymous on the internet.
