Before I start - please let me get it straight that I am in no way picking on anyones weight or appearance. I understand that not all weight issues are from over eating.

Ok

The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a classification of vices used in early Christian teachings to educate and protect followers from basic human instincts.

One of the 7 deadly sins is gluttony.

If you are overweight from practising gluttony (eating too much), then are you not going against the Christian teachings?

Hi Shalom - thanks for your input.

I believe you have gravely misinterpreted my question.

Yes, I am agnostic, which means that I have a very healthy interest in religion - all religions.

I most certainly am not using the Bible as a weapon, in fact, I think you will find that the 7 deadly sins are not actually mentioned in the Bible at all.

I do thank you for your input though - however, I stand by my comments. I have made it quite clear in my question that it is not intended to offend or judge - if ambiguity is construed, I am afraid that is the fault of the reader

Cheers

I have fought sin for a long time, everyone does, no one is sinless. The fact is though, that your question/statement is a very sensitive subject for many, many people. I am one of those people who has fought my weight for a very long time, and I am not even 20 yet. Yes, self indulgence is a sin, but there is something that needs to be cleared up here. Most people, including myself, do not eat just to eat. It is something that is hard to beat. It is an addiction that controls you, when you want so badly to break away. Whether it is from deppression, stress, abusive relationships, or whatever, the addiction can creep into your life as a source of comfort from the world.

God is a loving god, and he is not going to send you to hell just for fighting the battle against your weight. We have to confess our sin and ask him for forgiveness, and not let ourselves be overwhelmed by the hurt or sadness that can drive us into weight gain.

I am a Catholic Christian, and being very overweight is something I have to deal with daily. I am sure that there is someone around you, someone in your life that fights the battle against weight. There are people in every religion, every society who battles weight problems, though many other societies treat the people in question differently than western society does, our society often treating overweight people with contempt and scorn.

Please know this, God created us all with love, but our sin and hatred for one another has shoved a wedge between him and us. Overeating can be a sin, yes, but not always, and to suggest to others that they are sinners because they fight a emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical battle against weight is very hurtful to them.

Would you honestly be able to go up to a dear family member that is overweight and tell them that they are sinful because of that? That would hurt anyone, if they admit it or not.

It's true that Gluttony is a sin, but not all weight problems are caused by Gluttony! besides that there are many more reasons that people get over weight or obese, there are many illnesses that contribute directly to gaining too much weight, and then you also have many illnesses that contribute to much weight gain then also the medications for other illnesses can cause excessive weight gain, I think it's wrong to judge a person by their weight, religion, color or race.and if you believe that all Gluttons are overweight or that if you don't over eat you won't get fat, then you my dear are very naive, and uninformed, you need to educate yourself more, and do some research before and if you want to judge others, of whom you have no idea what their individual circumstances are, that cause their problem weight. Don't you know that the Bible also says Judge not lest you be judged in like manner! And your judgment is very unjust, to say the least , I have dealt with many overweight people and their reasons for being overweight are not all the same!

You will get farther by using the verse that the body is the temple of the Lord. Using the 7 deadly sins, you are bound to hear - "Well that's a Catholic doctrine," or "That's not in the Bible," or some such thing.

Edit... see what I mean?

If you practice gluttony you are committing one of the 7 deadly sins. If you are a liar, you are sinning against the "false witness" commandment. If you have a lustful thought in your heart, you are sinning against the adultery commandment. If you look with covetousness at your neighbor's car, you are committing the sin of covetousness. And so on. Sinners are able to repent.

The Caloholic curch even made 'alowances' for sin... (paraphraising)"pray and be good now and you build up wealth of forgiveness"...

Faith is all you need.. A sin is a sin.

I agree , but NOT all overweight people are gluttons. I am not a christian - I was just making a point. Also, there's tattooed christians who are taught to not mark their bodies. Their pastors ond priests are molesting children and stealing money. Christians are cheating on each other in their marriages and there's violence, hatred, abuse, fatherless children, and divorce in their homes - and they DARE to say that GAY marriage is a threat to them and they want to protect the sanctity of heterosexual marriage??? What a JOKE!

not necessarly because of over eating verses not eatting healthy foods, you can gain more weight eatting 2 meals that are high in calories than 4 healthy meals. most of the time people do not have time to cook foods properly or to properly exercise. We don't have feed bags on our heads geez. :) Not christian anyways :P

Anything GOD CREATE's is Created right the first time. It it change's after that, it's not right. GOD Created Human Being's to look a certain way(each one independently) if you change it, it's not right.(too thin or too thick)!!!!This is the basis for all error. It dosen't match what GOD did starting out!!!!!!
