It depends on how fast you walk, the type of ground you walk on, and the speed at which you walk.

What you need to focus on is burning more calories than you take in. Try using the link below to monitor calorie intake and burning.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. There are a number of different factors to consider:

1. Everyone is different. Some people have a higher basal metabolic rate than others.

2. Walking is great! It's low impact and is therefore better for your joints than running. If you have the time, it's one of the best things you can do.

3. It depends on how much weight you have to lose. If you are at a healthy weight and are trying to lose, it will be difficult (and dangerous!!). If you are overweight, it will still be difficult, but it is imporrtant to your overall health.

4. A general rule of thumb is to raise your heart rate to a level that is above average, but that is not completely exhausting, for a constant 30 minutes each day. (As walking is much less intense than running, it may be wise to extend this time)

5. STOP THE EXERCISE IF YOU FEEL FAINT, WEAK, OR DIZZY. It may be a good idea to consult a physician before undertaking a physical fitness program - especially in the summer heat.

6. Drink lots of water while you walk, it speeds your metabolism and helps you to keep exercising longer!

Work your way up to running (walk, power walk, jog, run), even if you have asthma and bad knees, like me. You don't have to be in a full sprint, perhaps 80%. Walking won't give you much heart and lung capacity, endurance, strength, strong bones, and a fantastic release of natural hormones than make you young, firm, lean and strong. I only run 3 miles a week, but all in one hour's time. Work's fine, but I push hard.
