Tom Durkin is the best. (GG I knew I would find an answer from you on this one). Durkin may be mediocre when calling the claiming races, but its the big races that I want to hear the best calls for. And he is the best for the big races. Trevor Denmans nasal voice can't go quite high enough to convey that sense of true excitement. But Trevor Denman is a very good racecaller, and is much better for the lower level races. Durkin does seem to be slipping a bit, and may not be quite as exciting as before. He is older and his voice has changed a bit with age. Trevors always solid, never truly outstanding, but never bad either.

Michael Wrona is average. Dave Johnson and Mike Battaglia are the worst.

The best of all time has to be Chick Anderson. His call of the 1973 Belmont won by Secretariat was the greatest call of all time and could not have been called more perfectly by anyone else now or then.

At a time when editorializing was not permitted and the race was called in the order of the horses on the track during the race....New York's Fred Capposella was probably one of the best and Chick Anderson will always be remember for his call of the 1973 Belmont Stakes in New York......'Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine...

In the 1988 Breeders Cup Distaff, Tom Durkin's call of the final race run by Personal Ensign in the back stretch when Durkin tried to wake up the other riders and horses on a rainy and muddy day...."Winning Colors is loose on the lead"....

Dave Johnson in the 1970's...'And, down the stretch they come and here comes Forego'.

And, Trevor Denman who always makes any race exciting.

Good question...Tough to answer.

No question about it.

Trevor Denman by a country mile.

He makes every race sound exciting.
His South African accent is pretty cool too.

Tom Durkin is probably 2nd but he sucks at calling non stakes races. Yeah, for the Breeders Cup and Triple Crown he's solid but he'll put you to sleep on a maiden race.

Trevor Denman makes any race worth listening too.

On the flip side of your question Dave Johnson is the worst.
maybe he was good way, wayyyyyyyyyyy, back in the day but the last 15 years he has sucked.

Here's a sleeper for you to listen to.
Michael Wrona, he's pretty good too.

Edit for Birddawg's response below:
Bird I completely forgot about Battaglia. Yes, he's the worst. Even below Dave Johnson. And his handicapping skills suck more than his racecalling ability. No way Chick Anderson is the best ever. He may have the 1 single race best call ever...but then again it was a great race. I think Trevor and Durkin would've had a great call too in the '73 Belmont.

And regarding your source: bwahahahahaha (pretty funny)

Trevor Denman by FAR. I'm only 18, but out of all those years I've been hearing his voice (my parentts brought me when I was little), I never heard him make a mistake ever. Not only that, he's got a great, fast, but clear voice. He also adds a sort of excitement to the stretch run like no other announcer I've ever heard. Watch a race that he annouces sometime, his commentating is superb, and I promise you'll get swept into the action. =o)

Roger Huston who announces at "The Meadows" in PA...he always fills the air with excitement and completely gets into each and every race, whether it be a claiming or stake race. Also Ken Warkentien is a good announcer from The Meadowlands. He actually had a horse named after him, just like Dan Pleasac did.
