Another reason this may happen is the windows audio services stopped. If that's the case, you can try the following.

1. From the Start menu, select Run...

2. Type services.msc

3. Click OK

4. A tabbed dialog will open with two panels, select the Extended tab at the bottom

5. Scroll down towards the bottom of the right panel till you see Windows Audio

6. Single click the name

7. Look to the top left and see if the link reads "Start this service"

8. If it does, click.

9. Click the close box in the upper right.

10. Recheck your sound.

If the service doesn't show "Start", don't mess with anything and just close.

IF you are running XP go to device manager and there will be a red x beside anything that isn't working properly. If there is a red x then right click, go to properties and go to update drivers. If that doesn't work go to driverguide.com and download the drivers for your sound card. Keep in mind that most drivers there are zipped, if you don't already have winzip, download it first from downloads.com
